Some diffrences between skin tags and hemorrhoids??

Postby adam » 28 Jun 2011, 18:44

Hey everyone :)
I was just wondering if there's anyone who had either both skin tags and hemorrhoids or just one of those.
What are the characteristics of each and differences between them? I've searched for this information but can't find anything more than vague explanations.
I wasn't sure if I had a fissure or hemorrhoids from the beginning, but when the skin tag or hemorrhoid appeared more visible, the pain increasee substantially. Now, about a week later of a lot of rest and proper bm's with the hemorrhoid ointment, i'm feeling a lot better, but not good enough for sitting yet.
Seems I have got both.
Thanks y'all Image

That's a good question Adam. I'm curious if there is a difference myself. The first CRS I saw actually diagnosed my skin tag as a hem. I didn't let him go inside for a look so he wasn't able to see the fissure. The second CRS got a better look and saw my fissure and said it was a skin tag.
I am not sure if seeing the fissure confirms that it's a skin tag, because I believe the tag is attached to the fissure because they develop as a defense to the tear.
Chances are ,probably if you felt blood and that tearing, pooping glass feeling and never had hem problems before, then you most likely have developed a skin tag. Just my guess....
Hopefully NG will come on and add something. He is better than google, LOL. I have tried to research too and can't find anything that would suggest they look different. Image

I believe that a hem is sort of a blood filled bulge, while a skin tag is more like scar-tissue that builds while a fissure is healing up.

Thank you Dawn :)
I still can't decipher what mine is though, I might just have to wait and see.

I've had both. A hemorrhoid feels like a round lump, like a small grape, but the skintag is thinner - like a small (or can be large) flap of skin.
I think they are both painful, but the hemmorroid feels like an achey, dragging feeling, the skintag just feels sore.

Yes Adam. Probably a exam by a good crs will be the quickest answer to what it is.... :)
My skin tag swelled to the size of a kidney bean(gross) and I couldn't tell if it was a hem or not. I've read they are commonly mis-diagnosed as hems and I believe that to be true cause it happened to me.

It does feel like a lumpy achey draggy bubbly thing rather than sore but it does sting at times. Thanks so much Val that was really good.
But you're right Dawn, I will have to set up an appointment with a specialist. I'm worried that I'll see a CRS who is in need of work and will insist on a surgery if I may not need it - is there any other specialists who aren't surgeons? I'm also worried for the tools and procedures they use to inspect the area :S what was the worst thing you came across??
And how long of a wait did you all have before you could see the specialist?

Hey Adam,
I usually had to wait about two weeks, sometimes longer to get into see my "good" CRS. The one I saw prior to seeing her took me in quick. He was a jerk and I figured he was so easy to get in fast with was because nobody else probably liked him. I kind of consider a long wait- a good sign. Well, it has been with my experience
Anyway, I never had an exam with a scope. From my experience, they won't do it unless you let them. It's a pretty good idea to let them have a good look so they can properly diagnose you and are able to see the fissure. I was gave the option to be put to sleep so they could do an exam before I was diagnosed with a fissure.
They usually have a pretty good idea by the symptoms that you got a fissure, but it has to be seen- to be sure.
My CRS who did my surgery just barely open me up, no scope, etc... and saw my fissure. It's a bit uncomfortable, but it's kind of got to be done.
There are no other specialist for butt problems that are as qualified as a CRS to diagnose and care for fissures/butt problems.
My CRS never pushed surgery but was willing to when I wanted it. She would have gave me more of the ointment(diltiazem) the day I told her I didn't want it, I wanted LIS,Lol. She said "ok , you're ready for the surgery, Ok lets schedule LIS"

CRS do all kinds of surgeries that have to do with colorectal problems. They deal with much more serious things than fissures. My surgery was canceled a couple of times by my CRS because of other life and death surgeries like colon cancer, etc... I doubt money would be a reason they would want to do LIS Image
You can always get a second opinion if you feel you are being told something that you don't feel right about....

It probably depends on what country you are from regarding the wait! I always see a private CRS which means I get seen within a week or two; NHS? Anybody's guess!!
My CRS tried a couple of times to use the anuscope but I freaked out so he couldn't use it, and I was having to have surgery both times anyway, because of fistulas, so he gave up and just did the exam EUA.
I dont really think there are many surgeons who would give you an unnecessary op. And yes, definitely get a CRS .
