Yay...... Hi Pia. I hope all is well with you?

A quick update from me.

Life is great!!
My bum is no longer the only thing on my mind! I have been busy making up for lost time, and the looonnngggg recovery from the flap. I even went on a Florida road trip! It seems such a short time ago sitting in the car was agony, but it's absolutely fine now. Like a 'normal' person!!!

I still take movicol every day, but that's a must with my IBS.

If you are reading this, I would like to reassure you that there is hope, you can heal and time itself is a great healer.

An update from me...... if there’s anyone on here that remembers me!!

I have been pretty much getting on with life with zero bum issues..... until I went plant based, and ended up having a difficult bm. I don’t think I have torn, but I’m really super sore and the scar tissue from my flap looks red and angry.
I’m soooooo upset with myself for eating differently, knowing that I’ve got such a sensitive tummy.
So, back to all the usual rituals of baths, sudocream, Vaseline before bm....... and an extra movicol for the time being whilst I heal.

Ugh........ I hate bums!!!!

Hi owmybum, I remember you, and I've been visiting this forum for at least the past 4 years. I'm so sorry you are suffering with pain and soreness again, and can sympathise - I can't seem to shake off the soreness, even though I've had numerous tests and treatments. Sometimes it seems as though this condition just won't relent no matter what one tries. Maybe it's also partly a psychological thing - I've found that if I really try to get my mind off AF and related problems and 'do other things' it does help quite a lot: even though the pain comes back again, it can drift off for long enough to make life liveable for a while.

For a long time I was anxiously visiting consultants at local hospitals and also travelling up and down to London to see physios and other specialists, but have now decided that I will just put up with the discomfort and try to get on with my life if I can. It's true, though, that setbacks caused by issues of diet can be really frustrating, and there is not much one can do about those except try to work out what foods and beverages are the least harmful - not always easy!

Sorry for going on about myself, but I thought it might be useful to compare notes. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi dmcff

Yes, I agree.... it is very important to just get on with things and get on with life.... but it’s very hard to do when the pain level is fairly high. I’m trying to carry on and stave off the anxiety... but it’s pretty hard to do!

What pain management are you doing? Do you take any meds? Use any creams?

I take pregabalin, 150 mg x3 each day. It helps a bit, I find - somehow it takes the edge off the pain and pushes it into the background. I stopped using creams and ointments like Nitro after a CRS at St Thomas's advised me to give them up - he said they were only making matters worse.

I was also given some stretch-type exercises by a physio at St Thomas's - but find them hard to do, as I lose concentration pretty quickly and have difficulty persevering with them. I never actually got to the Guys & St Thomas's pain clinic as such, but believe that the most they would have been able to provide as pain management would have been something like pregabalin/gabapentin, which I already have via my GP. I've looked at private PFD clinics like the one that's run by Karl Monahan (https://www.thepelvicpainclinic.co.uk/about/), but haven't really felt that it's for me.

Keeping the pain in check at a reasonable level is quite important, I think. Are you on any pain medication?

No, I’m not on any pain meds. I used to be on gabapentin, but I’ve been pain free for pretty much the last two years if not 3..... until last week!!!

I tried all the pain management, physios etc..... but in the end it was just time that healed me last time.... so I guess I’ll just have to wait to get better again this time.

Why did the dr say all the creams made things worse?? I’m just using a tiny bit of sudocream at the moment... everything else just irritates me more!

I think the creams and ointments like nitro (glycerin) and diltiazem are only meant to be used for a few weeks at a time, and I had been on nitro for months on a repeat prescription from my GP. The CRS just took one look and shook his head, which was a bit depressing at the time. I think that topical treatments can mess things up down there, and are probably better avoided, at least for me - I can't even tolerate the aqueous cream the physio recommended, it really irritates my skin.

Yes, with the passage of time the condition does get better - but I find that the improvement is only relative, and compared to how I was before this awful thing 'attacked' me I'm not that free of pain and discomfort. Hopefully in another year or two I'll be recovered, but having tried most of the treatments apart from Botox (about which the St Thomas' CRS was not very encouraging) and LIS (which no CRS will consider because of my age), I'm a bit sceptical. Well, and I haven't had advancement flap surgery, either. Did that surgery work for you?
