Anal fissure and vitamin B6

Postby pred » 24 Mar 2010, 12:40

Some of you might know that couple of months back I started a discussion about me being in severe pain for 2 weeks and needed help. Based on the recommendation and trying a simple home remedy my condition improved drastically. I was almost 80% healed. However, when I would stop Miralax for even couple of days and if my stool gets slightly harder, it would cause a tear and the pain would start again.
http://anal-fissure.org/new-to-the-forum-introduce-yourself-here-f11/does-heal-fissure-from-amoilcom-work-t2102.htm
I searched the internet and found a posting where some suggested taking vitamin B6 and that it helped them cure their AF.
I tried it and within 1 week, I not longer fear a BM every morning. I have no pain and clearly see my AF healing.
My question :- Has any one tried B6 and benefited from it? What is the relationship b/ AF and B6? How does B6 help cure AF?
Kindly let me know. Thanks!
Regards,
Pred

This link will tell you all about vit. B6.
Unless you were deficient in that vitamin (which is unlikely if you are otherwise healthy individual) - extra supplementation would not enhance any of the B6 effects - everything that is extra would be excreted in the urine.
On the bright side, since it is so easily excreted out - you can not get "overdose" and if taking that vit. makes you feel better - there is no harm in taking it : ))) !
Best of luck with your healing !!!

I don't know anything about the relationship between fissures and vitamin B6 but would caution against supplementing too much of it if you don't know what levels you have in your body. I used to have bouts of peripheral neuropathy (hence my username) that were caused in part by vitamin B12 deficiency. For a while I was supplementing several vitamins in the B-complex, including vitamin B6.
At higher than necessary levels, vitamin B6 will cause peripheral neuropathy. Some other vitamins in the B-complex can cause worse if taken at too high of a dose. The only one that's generally accepted as having no upper bound is B12, and even with that, there's some debate about whether extremely high levels of it in the body can cause neuropathy.
The nice thing about B6 is that the peripheral neuropathy it causes is understood to be reversible once supplementation stops. Still, neuropathy is an unpleasant experience, so if you decide to continue supplementing it, I'd strongly suggest periodically getting your B6 levels checked via a blood test. Bear in mind that deficiencies of several B-complex vitamins can also cause neuropathy, so it's a balancing act. But B-complex deficiency is pretty rare in modern countries for people eating more or less normal diets. If it helped heal your fissure, that's great! But just be careful.

HI,
I stopped taking vit B6. It helps for the immediate short term but caused constipation which made things worse so stopped taking it. Also first when I started taking B6 I tried 500 mg found in Walmart. The side effect was numbness in my hand and legs when sleeping so I stopped it. Then I rarely take 50 mg of vit B6 if my symptoms are really bad and I need some immediate relief but again they will cause constipation if taken continuously over 3-4 days (at least for me).
Its been over 18 months since I started this post and my condition is far improved. I seldom get a tear and even so I manage to heal in within 4-5 days.
I dont know if I gave a little background of how this all started for me. I was feeling fine; I had regular bowel movements and all of a sudden (one fine day) I got constipated which prolonged for many days causing severe tear and piles. All this happened within a span for 10 days and its been 2 years since then I am doing much much better. I suffered extremely for the first 6-8 months. I dont know what caused this and how this happened all of a sudden.
I went and check all the specialist, did colonoscopy and upper endoscopy... did Liver test, abdominal scan .. every thing and all results came fine. The docotor told I am absolutely fine and nothing is wrong with me. But obviously something was wrong... After a point I lost hope with alopathic medicine and felt nature should have a cure.
In the intermin to bring my situation under control, I started eating properly ie.. only the amount I need, lots of vegetables and fiber, avoiding greesy junk foods and so on (also salty foods like potato chips and popcorns made things extremely worse for me so avoided them completely).. and it helped contain the situation..
Also consuming alcohol made it terrible so I completely stopped consuming alcohol even beer and it really helped.
Meanwhile, I tried an aurvedic medicine for anal fissures and bleeding piles. I am from India and I knew ayurvedic medines works with no side effects. The link to the product is given below.
http://www.allayurveda.com/ShoppingCart/productsearch.asp?productid=310&actionstatus=static
The product is called PIRRHOIDS and its produced by Baidyanath.. a famous company know to produce some fine herbal products. Again, I am in no way associated with Baidyanath or the website I mention above. Its an unbiased endorsement bcos I tried the product and it helps me a lot.
I take 2 capsules in the monring and 2 in the night for 30 days, but you should notice the difference in 3-4 days depending on the severity of the situation.. Ayurvedic medines should be continued for a longer period of time for effective results. They are herbal and when consumed in the right quantity it has no side effects at all.
I also tried to understand what is the root cause for all this.. and after searching the internet and relating my symptoms I have a very strong feeling that the root cause of my condition could be leaky gut. Leaky gut has many symptoms but it mostly causes indigestion which inturn causes constipation which inturn causes tears and piles.
So, after some more research I am trying the following and it is helping..
1) I get up and take a capsule of pro biotic from Nature's way (optimum). Available in vitacost.com. Probiotic helps with healty floral balance in your intestine and helps in digestion.
2) Same time I mix 3 Oz of cholorphyll in a glass of water and drink it. I used a product from Nature's way and available in vitacost. Cholorphyll is know to increase the oxygen levels in your body, detox and help in the tissue healing process ..
3) Then I drink a glass of juice every morning as part of breakfast and I mix 8 Oz of aloe vera juice. Aloe vera as excellent healing properties and will help heal your skin inside out.
4) After my breakfast I take a multi-vitamin. I choose Alive from Nature's way and you get it in Walmart. It has 30 MG zinc and zinc is a very important minearal to help repair your cells. It has only 6 mg of B6 which is good.
5) Along with the multi-vitamin I also take cat's claw supplement from nature's way. Cat's claw is a very beneficial herb found in the amazon region which has very good anti-inflamatory and other good properties.
6) At night I take 1 capsule of "Magnesium-Calcium-zinc" from Nature's way. I mainly take it for the magnesium as it is resposible for over 500 chemical reactions in our body and helps in bowel movement. Zinc is also a very essential mineral as it is responsible for over 400 reactions but dont exceed beyond 45 mg of Zinc each day. A the alive multi-vitamin as 2 mg of copper so it gives a good balance of zinc and copper.
7) I have been going to the gym regularly and doing my cardio's at least 30 min daily and it helps bcos good blood circulation can itself heal many ailments.
I want to emphasise that I have almost completely stopped drinking (may be a beer once 3 months during company dinners) and its very important as I have often on notice cosuming alcohol causes my symptoms to come back.
All what I have mentioned above has been researched and adopted by me by trial and errors and final the regiment mentioned above seems to work for me. Also surprisingly, the severe acne breakout I used to have (almost 2 or 3 really bad breakouts every week) has completely dissapeared and they looks more healthy giving a sense of indication that my body is healing bcos I believe your skin is a indication of you health.
Ok, again, I have no relation with the products and the websites mentioend above but for the fact that I used them and have benefited.
Also, sorry for the many spelling mistakes bcos I was typing very fast (busy Sunday) but I wanted to write this note bcos only someone how has suffered from fissures really knows how painful it is and so I wanted to help in any way possible.
Hope this helps. Thanks!

hi Pred, thanks for your detailed reply! Am glad for you that you are doing well without having to go through surgery! That's a thread of hope for myself and others in the board!
I myself has been suffering from these terrible fissures back in April, after my d&c for miscarriage, i suddenly got constipated while resting at home on the 3rd day of my d&c, and eventually torn myself, ending with a fissure. As days passed, the healing has lots of ups (up to 95%) and downs (back to 10%) and i ended with 3 fissures now! Currently i am still healing (again) and hopefully... really, that it will eventually reach the 100% mark and STAY THERE!
Anyway, I thought vit b6 wld help, as i read from internet those who has vit b6 deficiency will develop anal fissures, so i was thinking no harm trying vit b6. But after taking some vit b6 for a few days, i've stopped. Reason being i read that we only nd about 2g of vit b6, and mostly we can get it from food? (correct me if i'm wrong).
So pred, you have totally recovered or still have seldom pinches / irritation?

I do get seldom irritations after a BM but they go away after few hours.
By the way forgot to mention that I take 1000 mg of L Glutamine before going to bed. L Glutamine helps in the repair of soft tissues in our body and usually used by body builders but is a very good supplement to take otherwise also and its particularly recomended for the healing of leaky gut syndrome.
