I had the LIS in May of this year and am still recovering. It has not been a perfect solution but I spend maybe a few days per-month in pain rather than most of each week.

If you dont mind, whats not healed this many months out? do you still have rectal discomfort from the surgury? or just fissures arnt gone or are they gone but still feel pain?

The discomfort from the surgery lasted two weeks. That pain actually gave the standard AF pain a run for its money. Since then, I still have spasms and occasional, minor bleeding but it decreases with frequency each month. From what I understand this isn't uncommon; some people on these forums have taken up to a year to feel 'normal' again and others have had to go back for a second (and third) procedure.

My CRS explained it to me like this: the procedure doesn't fix the problem, it creates conditions that allow it to heal. Some people are lucky and they wake up from the operation feeling like new. For me it is a process. Some of it is just accepting that this is part of my life for now, plus learning the triggers (certain foods, extreme stress) and addressing and/or avoiding those things.

Still, I'll take this occasional pain over constant agony, especially since it is trending in the right direction.

I was reading through your post again and noticed this. One thing I did not see in your list of attempted fixes is counseling. I am not suggesting that your condition is purely emotional, but the stress from the constant pain can throw it into a self-perpetuating cycle. For me, stress is *the* biggest trigger for this pain and recognizing that was a huge step forward. My body tends to go into fight-or-flight mode which makes me constantly clench. That in turn causes a tear which stresses me out further.

For a few months prior to my LIS I saw a pain psychologist. It wasn't like a regular therapist where you talk in-depth about your issues (though we did touch on that). Lots of it was biofeedback, hooking wires up to my skin to understand how my body responds to certain conditions, and then teaching me breathing exercises that helped me lower my heart rate which in turn helps your entire body unwind. That coupled with meditation (and all the medications and dietary adjustments) have been helpful.

I have also noticed, with me and others, that once you schedule the LIS the pain seems to decrease in intensity. It almost makes you second-guess needing the operation. I took this as my body finally relaxing, thinking that help is on the way - possibly proof that much of this condition is fueled by emotions.

Food for thought. Since you've suffered for so long it might be an avenue worth exploring.
Good luck.

I don't for a second believe this is solely a mental thing but i do believe it probably plays some role.

That said I had the same scenario as you, I had pain for 7 months all day everyday, the last 2 days before surgury i suddenly felt less pain, I could almost sit for extended periods which previously i could not.

Absolutely - it's much more than mental. I was just suggesting that a more holistic approach might be helpful. You might also want to look into prostatitis as a possible culprit for the tingling around your genitalia and maybe even a contributing factor to your rectal pain. I have been diagnosed with both issues; anal fissure and prostatitis. Both can have roots in pelvic floor dysfunction.

6 weeks post op

Still in alot of pain

Things I've noticed:
- Pain is 100% on the left side of the anus
- walking feels awquard on the left side an inch or two inside anus
- sometimes the pain will radiate down my left but cheek, i dont feel it in the leg but the ankle while walking strangely

So i followed up with my Surgeon, he is scratching his head and doesn't know whats happening

he thinks MAYBE (a wild guess) there is an abcess burried in there.

He's sending me for an MRI (30 days out) and prostate evaluation

he says my symptoms may be prostate related

I begin to think it might be pudendal nerve related or levator ani syndome, but i dunno

Let me also say that i've had for years left anus pain while pooping(but not after, and wouldnt linger) but usually with bleeding, when i told the surgeon this he said there is nothing there, but fissures at 12 oclock and 6 oclock(pre surgury that is).

what a nightmare.

Go for magnetic resonance it shows things even best specialists cant see.
With me it found a hidden fistula on the left like yours which was causing the pain and which was caused by operations 4 and 5 - this is after I was told that I will live in pain for the rest of my life. I had 7 operations most of them caused more damage than I had before - the 7th one fixed me. Don't go for any doctor find the best money can buy the doctors from operations 1-6 were found on the internet by me and just caused more damage. Go for the magnetic resonance. All the ointments in the world wont help I tried them all.
I was suffering for 4 years - after the 7th operation I'm pain free for 4 months now. Send me a mail if you need advise - kolevradoslav (at) abv.bg

Hi KennyG,
This post is for 5 years ago and I hope you've fully recovered by now. I was hoping you could share some of your experience. Did you finally see improvements post LIS?
