Does magnesium make you gassy?

Postby Kari-bee » 27 Oct 2015, 14:26

Just wondering if others are having this problem. I think the magnesium is helping, but I'm having more gas than is typical for me, and it's a bit uncomfortable. I can't be sure it's the magnesium, but I think it is. Thanks!

Well it does make things more loose for me, which means less absorption, which I think would make for more gas. I am usually gassy anyway since I have IBS. Are you taking a stool softener? How much magnesium are you taking?

I've only been taking about a teaspoon but I think I'm done with it, just hate the gas pains. I'm not taking a stool softener but thinking about it. Trying to manage with just diet, but I think I need things to be more consistently soft.

Many on here swear by Miralax/Movicol/Restorlax (different name depending on where you buy it). I am one of them. Nothing makes things consistently soft like it does...

I didn't like magnesium. I tried taking the minimum amount and it didn't agree with me. Gave me an upset stomach and my stools were too loose. Restorolax (Miralax) is still working like a charm for me after several months, without any noticeable side effects.

Sorry if this shows up twice, think I had a little hiccup in trying to post this just now.

Is Miralax safe for ongoing use? I thought it was only for short term use?

Thanks,
Karen

I have had some Doctor's say that it is and some say that it could cause dependency. My personal opinion is that because it is an osmotic laxative (that is, it is nonstimulating and just causes the stool to hold water) it is safe for long-term use. I have been on it for years and have had no isssues with dependency (that is, I do not need to take more and more to have the same effect). I personally have no problem with taking it indefinitely if it means less butt trouble. Hope this helps ;)

I swear by my magnesium and it works perfectly for me but if I take too much (sometimes I get scared about what I've eaten or done that day) I get upset tummy cramps etc. I take 400mg tablets (perhaps tablets are gentler than the liquid form?) twice daily with my food.
