Hi, I am brand new to this resource and currently living my nightmare. I am a relatively healthy 34 year old male. The last month and a half have been a test and really leaving me feeling helpless. This past December was incredibly hectic busy holiday season (I work in retail management). Towards the end of the month I felt a little pain around the anus and thought I was getting a hemmorohid and started treating it as such with over the counter remedies. On Christmas Eve I woke up to the most excruciating pain and had to be driven to the ER. I was told it was a perianal abscess and a incision and drainage was performed and I was told I should be back to normal in a few days. Nothing improved and drainage continued, I felt extremely weak and completely drained. I had follow ups with my primary care physician who had me returning for weekly follow ups. After 3 weeks I had developed a “mound” of flesh and noticed fecal mater coming out of the abscess after BM. My dr refered me to a general surgeon who wouldn’t be able to see me for two weeks. At this point I was feeling helpless and weaker by the day. I was able to find a colorectal specialist on another island (I live in Hawaii) who could see me the next week. 4 and a half weeks after the initial er visit I see him for a consultation and he tells me I need surgery the next day. After surgery which was supposed to be an outpatient procedure he tells me it was a complex fistula and I end up admited to the hospital for 5 days. The surgeon removed the mound of flesh around the abscess, closed the internal fistula and put in a Seton stitch. I am now two weeks post surgery and everything hurts. BM have become so painful and I all I can do is lay on a pad. Emotionally this has taken a major toll, I have had stay with family the entire time because I can not do any basic things like laundry or cooking. I can not wait for an end to this ordeal...
