Questions for those who've had surgery.

Postby sman » 06 Apr 2010, 12:45

Hi guys
I'm 6 days post op, and have a few questions for folks who've had surgery.
I had a fissurectomy, with an advancement flap and botox.
Not sure why this approach was the one taken, but this was what the specialist I saw told me was best. To be fair, he wasn't much of a talker.
The way it was explained to me, was that the dead skin around the fissure is cut away, a stamp size piece of skin is then excised from just above the fissure and then stitched over the wound from where the fissure had previously been.
Botox is then injected into the muscles around the wound to stop them from spasming.
The surgery went well I was told, and then sent off with just some paracetamol and ibuprofen.
At this point I demanded something a little stronger, as I didnt believe that would be enough. I was given some tramadol.
I'm now 6 days after the op and in a lot of pain.
BM is about as painful as before the op, in much the same sort of way, with a reasonable amount of blood each time.
I am using Lactulose as a softener, but this seems to have a mind of its own. Some days it will result in nigh on diarrhoea, which is fine with me as its easy to pass, though does make for a fairly miserable day with your stomach churning away whilst you put off the inevitable. Other days it doesnt seem to soften stools much at all resulting in much more painful BMs.
On the whole, its perhaps maybe 10% more painful than pre op at present.
What I didnt expect though, was all the external damage? From the way the op was described to me, I didnt expect to see any stitches as that would have all gone on up inside the pipes.
However I seem to have quite a number of stitches going in various directions around the opening. I also seem to have what appear to be very big pinched blisters - perhaps where some sort of instrument has been clamped on the cheeks to keep them open?
The pain in touching myself around the bottom area is high. So there's this to content with aswell as the BM pain.
I wanted to ask if this is normal? Does anyone know why I would be seeing stitches externally and what might have caused the pinching?
Should I be demanding stronger pain killers maybe?
Any advice anyone can give me would be great, and hopefully serve as a good look up point for anyone else facing the same surgery.
Thanks
S

I just had the LIS and it sounds like what you had done is pretty hardcore, they originally gave me perc. but it made me feel weird, so i asked for something milder. I really think you should ask for something stronger, don't suffer through it!!!!

i'm pre-op and tramadol doesn't cut it for me--with what you've had i would definitely be asking for something stronger--vicodin or even percocet...
i know when i'm post-op (and i'm only doing LIS--your's sounds way more painful) i'll be asking for the good stuff!
good luck!

Hi, I'm so sorry you're in so much pain. I had LIS which helped some but not entirely. The doctor recommended sliding flap anoplasty for me but for now I said no. I think you're very brave. I also think your pain mends are insufficient, get something stronger that will give you some relief. As for the blister looking thing, call your doctor. It could be part of recovery but it could also be the start of a fistula and the sooner they take care of that the better. Ask and see if you're allowed to do any sitz baths, they may help. Maybe filling a hot water bottle and carefully placing it on the area may help too. I know for me sitting on a warm heating pad helps. I wish you a speedy recovery. Hopefully all the agony you are going through will just be a memory in a few weeks. Suzy
