Has anyone had the surgery and realized it wasn’t needed?

Postby JulsPain » 27 Jun 2019, 13:55

My CRS has told me if the Lidocane cream she prescribed doesn’t work, surgery will be the only thing that helps.

I go back and forth between getting the surgery because some days the pain/irritation is manageable, others I just think I should go for the surgery so I can stop thinking about it.

After reading lots of stories on here, I feel like I’m in much less pain than others, but it is irritating. I just don’t want to make the wrong decision here.

Has anyone been in the same position? I’m tired of waiting it to heel, the creams, and all the worrying. I just don’t want to make a terrible irreversible decision that wasn’t needed.
When a CRS approves surgery, is it pretty much 100% needed at that point?

You probably have already, but just to be sure; have you tried a diltiazem and/or nitroglycerine ointment? As far as I know the treatment algorithm is 1. diltiazem/nitroglycerine 2. Botox injection 3. surgery.

Maybe you can discuss and try Botox first?
20/01: Slowly healing fissure-like wound due to surgery
11/03: Started Diltiazem.
07/06: Barely any pain or blood, but it's not fully healed yet.

Hello,

I did nitroglycerin first but only for a couple of weeks. First two weeks of using it it was giving me a lot of irritation. I did a small break, then used for a few more weeks with no issue.

No results, currently am using Diltiazem until 7/10 so we shall see but so far not much improvement. I apply 2-3 times a day.

My CRS does not do Botox nor does recommend it as the risk of neurological damage is present and it has less of a chance of working than LIS. Insurance may not cover it as well either and I’m a recent college grad so probably can’t afford it.

I'm with you... I've been dealing with this thing for approaching 2 decades. The pain has never been too bad, and because the pain isn't too bad it's not worth it for the surgery (until 3 weeks ago when things changed for me).

I think I am finally coming around that the if the surgeon thinks the surgery will be beneficial then I am going to do it. This is after my most painful relapse this past 3 weeks, but quite honestly I've been thinking about this for about a year. My fissures always come back.

Like you, I'm tired of the worrying the creams, the miralax, the baths, etc etc.... I just want to not deal with this damn issue anymore.

Each case is individual, and even though it may cost, you might want to get a 2nd opinion to see if the another CRS agrees that you surgery would be the best course of action for you. It would probably put your mind at ease some too.

Hi! Your situation sounds exactly like mine. I have had my fissure for 5 months but the last 2 were only minimal pain or discomfort. I am going for LIS on Tuesday so will update you on that and hopefully that might help you if you are sitting on the fence about it!

My reasoning was this- The last 2 months I was in minimal pain but I was soooo strict with diet, baths, creams etc. I cancelled work a lot, didn't go out or socialise hardly at all, was very obsessive with food diaries etc etc. It felt like my full-time job was trying to heal the fissure and I was losing a lot of money and sanity in the process. Not to mention that I was getting more and more depressed and anxious having small panic attacks frequently. I wasn't seeing any improvement despite all the hard work so decided that I needed to take the next step. My CRS was very supportive of that sentiment without pushing and he made me feel very comfortable as he's been doing LIS for years.

So that's where I am at! It might not work but I really feel like my natural healing route was not going to work (for me) so I am ready to go under the knife and see!
- February 2019 : Fissure
- Tried all of the creams, perfecting the diet, self dilation
- Reduced symptoms significantly but still not healed
- July 2019 : LIS with tag removal

I don’t believe I received your email! Have u had your lis yet? I’m in the waiting room now and I’m having an examination due to more pain after Botox which was 4 weeks ago, and maybe Botox again or lis which I just signed giving them the go ahead. Will keep you updated
