How long is recovery time?

Postby Ducky » 05 Aug 2011, 19:23

I've been suffering for more than 10 months now. I am really sick of staring at the blank walls in my home because I can hardly go anywhere without bringing a suitcase of fiber supplements, laxative, water, prunes, etc. My teenage years are ruined. Image
The diet my doctor instructed seems to be working, but not drastically... So far, I've been on the doctor's diet for almost 2 months. But I feel like it's never going to heal, and that I will need surgery after all this time I wasted.
My questions are:
1. How much longer until recovery would you say?
2. When it's healed, will there be scar tissue? If so, does that mean the tissue there is weaker and a higher chance of tearing again?
Thank you so much. Image

Hey Ducky,
I am sorry you are having to deal with this. Unfortunately once a fissure becomes chronic they are impossible to heal without surgery. Scar tissue does develop when a fissure heals and re-tears over and over. Are you seeing a Colorectal Surgeon? They specialize in fissures and butt problems and can advise you on what steps you need to take to heal your fissure. Diet alone usually doesn't heal a fissure once it's chronic.
Don't be afraid of the surgery- if it comes to that. I know it's scary but it can heal the fissure and give you your quality of life back. I had the surgery 9 months ago and it healed my fissure. The re-tears will happen if the muscle is too tight. The surgery will loosen the muscle(sphincter) and allow the fissure to heal for good.
Take care Image

Has your doctor put you on any sort of other regimen besides changing your diet?

You should address your questions to your CRS. Only they will be able to tell you what surgery is appropriate and how long a recovery period to expect. However the length of time for recovery will be dictated by the care you take post any op you have. Just accept you have to take things slowly and you'll be okay, there is no quick fix sadly. Take care and keep it soft!!

A teenager should not have this problem.
As your doctor about Gluten Intolerance or celiac disease.

I disagree Ouch. Even babies get fissures. All it takes is one hard poop Image All medical literature will tell you that.
The things you mentioned are always a possibility with anybody but sometimes a fissure just happens at any age.

Dawn, I realize that you can get a fissure at any age.
I meant to say " A teenager should not have to go through this kind of problem"
I meant my original statement to be sympathetic.
I am now convinced that Gluten is one of the major causes of ALL health care related issues.. I will bring it up in almost every context..
Malabsorbtion of nutrients causes every problem in the body.
The more I research it the more I am convinced that it is a epidemic.
