my saintly wife took a picture of it. She says it is around 7 o'clock heading towards my back and it is red and angry. It looks superficial but wide. Does LIS heal something that comes out that far and looks like a long, thick, nasty paper cut? Or do they cauterize it or something?

I was just checking in and thought I'd answer your post.
LIS will loosen the internal muscle which will allow your fissure to heal. Mine was cauterized along with my LIS because of scar tissue. I had my fissure for 8 months so I guess there was a little scar tissue that needed smoothing down. I don't really thing the size of a fissure matters if it's chronic and not healing then most people will need LIS or some other medical intervention to heal it.

Also I wouldn't really worry too much about your fissure not being exactly at 6 or 12. Some are a little off and it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

My doc cauterized mine too.

gosh, my CRS said mine is a very small one, but despite it being a few mm only, it already produces great sharp pain. I can't imagine yours!!!

Mine was massive and went right up to the muscle. But size is irrelevant - some people can have a huge one with very little pain, some have very small ones and are in agony. I think it depends on it's location. Mine is at 4 o clock.

I had 2 fissures at the same time, so I agree with the girls. They all hurt whatever and wherever they are! You can even get a fissure on your tongue too you know!!
