Chronic Fissure - Please help!

Postby brittany313 » 19 Feb 2012, 06:44

Hello, my name is Brittany, and I am so glad to have found this site, Please help!! I am a 24 year old student who unfortunately has been dealing with anal fissures for an estimated 5 years now. I frequently get constipated and in the past used to tear the outside cavity of my anus every month or two, to the point there it was bleeding. I would happen often, though they would heal quickly enough I never had issues. I also noticed a skin tag had developed around 2 years ago. The past 5 months however the pain has gotten much worse and almost unbearable at times. I dread passing bowel movements, because afterwords I will be in pain for hours and unable to do anything but lay on my bed waiting for the pain and spasm to pass. The pain is no longer a crack around the outside of the anus, but a strong and excruciating aching sensation deeper inside the anal cavity. There are no signs of blood however.
Even at times I am not constipated, but push during a bowel movement it is greatly irritated. What I would like to know is what the pain could be exactly, if its severity is bad, and if i need to seek help. If anyone could get back to me that would be greatly appreciated, as I have not mentioned it to anyone before.

brittany... Yes, getting checked out by a doctor, preferably a colorectal specialist, is really important, not just for a diagnosis, but also because there are medicines that could help if it is a fissure.
In the meantime, it is important to get your stools softened and to avoid straining during bowel movements. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet, increase water intake, use some sort of stool softener like Colace or Miralax, try prunes or prune juice, magnesium, etc. You might also want to consider a fiber supplement like psyllium.
Please don't hesitate to see a doctor. They see these problems every day, and there is nothing for you to feel uncomfortable about by asking for some help.
Wishing you all the best...

Hey Brittany,
jr is right on the money.
You can google colon rectal surgeon in your area. Then look on ratemds.com and see which ones have better reviews.
It's so important to get at least 25g of fibre a day, plus 10 or so glasses of water (herbal tea, juice... not counting coffee or pop or alcohol).
The first time you see a doc about it, it is kinda embarrassing, but you get over it. And jr is right, they have seen more asses than you'll see in your whole life time. :)
The aching sensation could be spasms in your sphincter muscle. Look around the forum here for more info on that. It is a pretty common side effect of AFs.
Let us know what the doctor says eh?

Brittany,
Look around at the messages here... these folks helped me more than three GP doctors. As those above have said, diet, water and Miralax (best stool softener! generic is clearlax and others). Also, see a colorectal surgeon, mine works out of General Surgery Department... they help you with non surgical treatments, not just surgery, don't worry. Mine is great.
Hope you feel better!
hang in there!! Image

Thank you everyone for your responses, I will definitely get it checked out. In addition, it is very common after a bowel movement (making sure everything is wiped), around an hour or two later if I go and wipe again there will be excess waste (as if i didn't wipe well last time). Im not sure if this anal leakage is correlated or not, but its kind of embarrassing and definitely effects my confidence in my sex life, as im always afraid I will not be clean despite when I washed last. Wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing?

You might try sitting in more of a squatting position on the toilet. Get a stool of about 7" so your knees are higher than your bottom.
I find since I got a stool, that I don't ever have that "did it all come out?" feeling.
Been using mine for over 2 weeks now.

The pain deep inside sounds like an internal anal fissure. I have been diagnosed with the same.

All good advise above. I will put my extra thumbs up for MiraLAX. I was under the impression stool softener meant diarrhea, but it is just not the case. It really just makes the movement perfectly easy to pass and allows you time to heal for a while without worrying about tearing with a hard movement. Since I have found the product I find myself saying "Thank God" after a movement and no sign of blood. Baby steps and heal quickly.
