Two words...ADVANCEMENT FLAP

Postby owmybum » 18 Mar 2013, 09:57

I had my appt today with my crs. We discussed the results of my tests.
It seems that my anal resting pressure is not too high, so lis is not even a consideration for me.
I seem to remember the words advancement flap, and only option, being said, then that was that... I really wasn't expecting that one so I just sort of switched off and tried not to cry to be honest.
I asked the success rate..70%.. Again felt disappointed.
I asked how many he had done ...only 20 in the last 10 years... Again felt disappointed
I asked how long the waiting list... September... Again felt disappointed... But really really disappointed as I couldn't go in on the date offered so have to be seen in November now... I can't say I was disappointed again, coz this time I was crushed.
I managed to hold it together though, and feel my only option is to go for a second opinion and to go private.
This is the second crs I have seen in my area, so I feel now I have no choice but to look into seeing one in London.
I really don't have a huge problem with the advancement flap op.... It's just the fact that he has only done 20 and I will have to exist like this for another 8 months! Image
Any advice, recommendations or anything would be really appreciated right now!

Sorry for your trouble :(
When it comes to surgery, I think its best to have a second opinion. (and even a third if it comes to that)
8 months of suffering is unreal. I would go somewhere else. Its 8 months of your life you will never get back!
Just my opinion...
- Fissure developed in Jan '13
- Started rectogesic in Feb '13 and diltiazem Apr '13.
- Got botox Jun '13
- Healed by Okt '13, although I still had some irritation for about a year.
- New fissure April '22, healed June 2022
- New fissure 24. December 2023

OMB, please don't lose hope, we can get through this together. I would get a second opinion. Maybe pay to see a private CRS, then have the treatment back on the NHS. Different CRS have different views and ideas, unfortunately for us, this makes it harder. If you do a google search for recommended CRS in the uk it will give you a list.
I know the Bowel clinic in Birmingham is good, also Nuffield private healthcare. My CRS said that advancement flap is the last treatment for AF.
I know you are feeling shattered now, but please keep going even if you need to cry, get it out!
Please let me know how you are.
I have told myself that I will even rack up a credit card debt to pay private if needed, as health is more important than anything. R xx

Hi OMB, so sorry to hear of your experience at your appointment with the CRS. These consultations can sometimes really bring us down, as I also experienced.
I don't know whereabouts in the UK you live, but if you are considering seeing someone in London and want the details of the surgeon who finally fixed me, I'd be happy to give them. I saw three surgeons in all, and only the final one could see what was going on and state the solution (as well as other options). He's very good at explaining, drawing diagrams to assist and patiently answers all your questions - although he's so thorough in his explanations that I found I didn't really have many questions left by the end of the appointments.
Anyway, if you're looking for suggestions from people for surgeons in the UK they've found are good, I'd be happy to give you his details.

Cheryl.... Unfortunately.. Still the same!! (Insert equally bad word here)!
Rachael.... Thank you, yes, I think I will have to go out of my county and pay to go privately. I have seen the two crs that work in the local hospitals, and the private hospitals in the county too!!
Lauren,..... Yes please.. I would love any recommendations. I would certainly be willing to travel to London. I am in dorset. Would you pm me the info please.
Thanks all.

Sorry your appointment didn't go we'll. I was hoping you would have some good news. I would definitely see another crs if possible. Keep up the faith.

OMB I am so sorry! I haven't been bad as long as you (over a year). But I understand how crushing bad news from the Crs can be. You had an anal pressure test right? We're u spamming at the time? Within 2 days I went to two Crs and one said i was not tight and one said I was vey tight! So perhaps you fluctuate also. I am so sorry. Sending prayers and wishes your way. Please do go see someone private. Get another opinion. May take a few different tries to find a dr you feel comfortable with.

Delasama..... Thank you xx
Hopeful.... Yes, I have had the pressure test, it was over a year ago, when things were starting to settle down first time, so maybe things showed I wasn't too bad then?? The consultant who did the proctogram and anal ultrasound in December commented on how tight I was down there though!!
Mmmmmm.
