VSL3 Probiotic

Postby thisunpleasant » 17 May 2013, 19:22

Hello all,
I saw an acupuncturist who recommended this specific probiotic, because I told her I had taken lots of antibiotics in my lifetime. This probiotic seems very strong though. Has anyone here taken it?

Have not taken it, but am thinking of taking one called Custom Probiotics, 11-strain, which after some research of the various ingredients I hope will help with my IBS. Plan to start on a very low dose of it. Image

VSL-3

Postby lefthanded » 10 Jul 2013, 15:14

I have been taking VSL#3 ever since I had my entire colon removed, and a reservoir created out of my ileum called a j-pouch. It is recommended to those with no colon as the probiotics in it survive the entire transit, and have been clinically tested and found to help prevent pouchitis, which is like colitis. In over 10 years I have only been diagnosed with pouchitis a few times. I supplement it with other probiotics, including yogurt.

I actually got sick with a bad bacterial infection called C Diff because of antibiotics. I never tried the VSL-3 but my doctor suggested I used Florastor and Culturelle. They worked really well for me. Florastor helped get rid of the infection and Culturelle has prebiotics with the probiotics which help recolonize the good bacteria in your colon.

VSL-3 was initially developed for people without colons, to help keep a bacterial balance in their -S-pouch, j-pouch, or continent ileostomy. It was developed to help prevent pouchitis, a type of colitis for those who have had their colons removed and the ileum turned into a reservoir.
