Miralax long term

Postby MangoSD » 09 Oct 2014, 09:57

Hello All,

My GP told me that Miralax was safe to take every day for the long term. The CRS I just saw yesterday said I should not be on Miralax long term and he wants me to ween myself off of it. I am in the middle of another episode (due to having the anoscope put in yesterday) and there is no way I'm giving up my Miralax. I refuse to have a hard bm as that just makes things much worse. I'm now buying the Glycol 3350 at Costco and using their brand instead of Miralax because its half the price.

I'm doing everything else right -- h2o, fiber, etc....but you just can't predict when you're going to have a hard bm and then its back to square one. Who else is on Miralax for the long term?

Thanks
Mango

Hi :)
I use a stool softener close to miralax, and it's safe to use long term. I wouldn't worry about it. However, have you tried magnesium to avoid hard stools? I had hard stools from time to time, and i would have a re-tear every time. Now i take 500mg magnesium every night before i go to sleep, and haven't had a hard BM since i started it. :) Magnesium saved my butt!

Thank you for the tip. I have never tried magnesium. I'm going to get some TODAY!

I take a full dose of miralax, 3 stool softeners (docusate sodium), and magnesium. Now I add mineral oil occasionally. I've learned the hard way that weaning from these things is not worth living in misery. My doc said miralax is perfectly safe long term. Of course we would all prefer to not take miralax but in this case the risk in not taking it is far more significant than taking it. You have to weigh the cost to the benefit and with the general medical opinion being that it is a benign long term solution, I am willing to continue use.
