anoscope

Postby val » 07 Feb 2008, 11:33

I just recieved the bill from my post-op check-up and it says I had a rigid sigmoidoscopy when he checked me, which I am being charged Ј100 for! I phoned up and said that he only examined me for about 15 seconds and I didn't have a sig apart from in the actual op. She said that it was on his notes that he had used an anuscope and she had charged me accordingly. I didn't like to go into detail with her because it was kind of embarrassing to argue about what he actually put up my butt, over the telephone!! Cringe!
Sooo, my question is...has anyone had an anoscopy and not actually noticed? To put it bluntly, I assumed he just used his finger and it was over very quickly. What is the anuscope for anyway, and how do they look into it, because she said it was a camera. CAMERA? I've taken photographs that have taken a lot longer than he took (and less bloody expensive:lolflag: )

A sigmoidoscopy is like a mini colonoscopy. There is a little camera attached so that the dr can see the rectum. an anoscope is different and can be done very quickly. it looks kinda like a speculum that drs use for vaginal exams, except it's more rounded and smaller. It's usually about the same size as a thumb and can be inserted and removed fairly quickly and easily, no camera involved. I don't see why you would be charged so much for an anoscope, and I think you would know if you got a sigmoidoscope.

Thats what I thought! Sorry to be stupid, but how does he actually see inside with the anuscope? And wouldn't it have taken a bit more time than he took?

He can't see to far inside. It's my impression that he just looks through the end of the tube. anoscopes can be fairly quick, but you would definitely notice if something were inserted. That's what tore me a new one with the last surgeon in Dec.

Yea, I remembered that, that's why I thought that I would have noticed, but it was literally a few seconds. Thats the quickest hundred pound I've ever spent!

Yes I had an anoscopy and a proctoscopy when I saw the CRS on the NHS and it took all of a couple of minutes. Sigmoid you need to have laxitives or an enema for and they are not done just like that. So it sounds like it was an anoscopy. On the list for private hospitals here the charge for sigmoidoscopy is mre like 900 pounds, so the 100 is probably about right. Thats why they drive Aston Martins and we dont!!!!

Sounds like a mistake on the secretary's part. I'd query it hun.

I'd query too. I had a dr who was planning to do a sigmoidoscope but didn't. Had I been paying out of pocket, I have a feeling I would have been billed for it. I'd definitely double check AND i'd do my best to make the secretary cringe by describing exactly how I could be so darn sure I didn't have one!!! LOL

anoscope,,,,,,, i still remember when i first visited my doctor for my anal bleeding and he inserted an anoscope to check for my condition. The result are as follow
1) it made my fissure bad or i can go the extend of saying worse
2) for about a month i was having pain
3) it gave me another fissure (mine was a posterior one) and after the anoscope episode i also have one in the anterior
so my request to all members is that when ever u visit a doctor insist him for using apparatus or devices that won't cause further trauma( some one mentioned child anoscope that is smaller in size) had i know it before i would have definitely insisted on not using anoscope or using a smaller one
