Have my 1st follow-up dr. appt. this afternoon

Postby sidra1968 » 24 Aug 2009, 07:54

Hey all...I have my first follow-up today. The surgery was 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I felt completely normal and was off all pain meds Friday and Saturday..but Sunday the wound area started hurting a tad. Seems to do this after times that I have more than 1 bm in a short time period (which with IBS, is going to be most of the time!)..must be from the constant irritation and painstaking clean up.... anyway, it's bearable and I still haven't taken any pain meds, just toughing it out. The incision site is like a hard , painful lump..definitely gonna find out what the hell that is all about. $20 bucks says the doc will just say it's all a normal part of healing.
This is my first day off in 2 full weeks, so I will take a few sitz baths and update you all on the appt. later this afternoon!

Sidra,
Good luck with the doctor and have a nice day off! I'd take your $20 bet but I don't like losing money :)
Let us know how it goes, I ate a little more than I usually do yesterday and will be pooping my face off repeatedly today right along with you today, I think.
Anyhow, fingers crossed for you!

So how'd it go? All smooth sailing on the "southern front" hopefully?

Well...I lose the $20..lol..the hard lump is actually an infection at the incision site...painful to the touch.. SO, he manipulated it to get the blood out and took some stitches out to relieve pressure on it..it hurt really badly (I clawed at the wall) BUT IT STILL didn't touch the fissure pain!! I told him and a
nurse that was helping exactly this so maybe for/with future patients they will try to comprehend what we've all been going through..
Got some major antibiotics. He said if it doesn't go away I'll have to come in and get it lanced...OOUUUUCCHH!!! Still think it'd be better than our fissure pain though.
Feeling ok otherwise, it's not too bad and hopefully the antibiotics will take care of it..BUMMER though, it is such a strong antibiotic that contains some Antibuse (SP?) derivative (that they give to alcoholics to make them sick if they even sip a drink) SO ..looks like I'll be teetotaling it at the big Illini/Mizzou tailgate..that'll be the last day of the 10 day course..The pharmacist said I'd get violently ill if I drink alcohol at all. .Oh well, probably save me a hangover :)

I'm so sorry to hear that :( If they lance the infection I'd think they would do it under sedation though. When I went to the ER last week, the doc there told me that he'd put me under, examine the rectum, and if he saw an absess, he'd go ahead and drain it while I was conked out. I had to sign the consent form for that of course but he said he definitely wouldn't do it without sedation given all the pain I was in.
What kind of antibiotics did they give you by the way? My whole fissure saga started when I got constipated from antibiotics. First I had Avelox (fluoroquinolone class), then Augmentin (penicillin class), and finally Biaxin XL (macrolide class). I doubt you'll have a problem since you're on Miralax but do keep an eye on it, at first I got major diarrhea from antibiotics but about a week later it turned into hardcore constipation.
So is the pain now worse than before? Hopefully it's just irritation from the doctor poking around there during your visit... Being completely sober at the Illini/Mizzou game is going to suck (it'll be an unique experience at least!) but hey, small price to pay to get rid of that damn fissure. Besides, you know Mizzou is going to win anyway right haha :)
Sorry again to hear about your temporary setback. I had my own last night in the form of repeated watery diarrhea. Hope that infection dies off quickly, fissures are nasty but infections definitely can have a wider systemic reach and should be nuked right away!

Thanks buddy. well it feels ok since he drained it as much as he could yesterday. I'm actually applying hot compresses and it seems to be drawing some discharge out. He said if they need to lance it they would just give a numbing shot there first...hopefully it won't come to that! But if it does, oh well, better than before.
I will get back to on the antibiotic (I'm at work right now) I do know it's taken 3 times daily and better work, dammit! I know it's no form of penicillin because I'm allergic to amoxicillin.
Yeah, I'll probably be the only sober one there barring kids..Oh well, least I won't stumble and hurt my toe like I did last year walking to the casino after the game to drown my sorrows (some more) Image

Hey what's a rivalry game without some post-game stumbling :) Or, more typically, "coming back to your seat at the beginning of the 4th quarter stumbling" Image
I'm allergic to penicillin too. Found out the hard since Augmentin is a penicillin based antibiotic. I was fine for a week but on day 8 I erupted in an itchy rash all over my body.
Keep us posted on what happens!

Haha funny you should ask. I actually felt like I was improving slightly for a few days, but last night that facade ended. I had to take a poo, had some mild pain but generally smooth sailing. But that was quickly followed by 6 trips back to the bathroom (the kind where you run to the bathroom since it's so urgent) for watery diarrhea. So yeah. Fissure wasn't too happy last night. It wasn't a spasm pain (I think the Valium kept that at bay) but it was that raw irritated sore feeling. Maybe I tore it a bit more or something.
Today's been okay so far, but I haven't had to poop yet. Probably evacuated too much of it last night. We'll see how it goes. I take late lunches usually (around 3-4 PM or so) so a few more hours before I have my answer. I have Percocet at the ready in case this next poop tries to get rough with me though!

That stinks (no pun intended). lol. Have you decided what to do? I was also gonna tell you that I had a hysterectomy (which the doc said was somewhat equivalent surgery-wise to your wife's planned c-section) and I was better fairly quickly (granted I didn't have to deal with twins), but hopefully she'll recover quickly and maybe you can go get the LIS. I left the hospital the next night and was up and about pretty good in a few days, albeit moving gingerly, etc. I really hope you can get to the point I'm at...it's soooo nice to feel "normal" again - I want that for you and all of the people here.
