Miralax

Postby redbug12 » 09 Mar 2013, 07:50

I am new to this forum and after reading through quite a few posts I realized a lot of people here take miralax. Is it something safe to be taken on a daily basis? I fear that once I start I might be dependent on it 

It is safe. My crs said to take it for life if I need.i noticed some people shouldn't take it if they have ibs though.
You won't get dependent on it. Just drink a good amount of water everyday. Because miralax absorbs water into stool so that it will be soft.miralax is great. I take about 17g with hearty breakfast and 17g again with dinner. I have one or two soft poops a day. It's definitely saved my ass .

I take 17g every other day. However I am being extremely good with my diet and H2o intake since I am not so busy with work at the moment. I did take it once a day in the beginning and I would say everyone's body will react a bit differently. This whole fissure thing seems to be an experiment in getting well at times. I use it every other day because I found after a while with good diet and H2o intake things can get to loose if you overuse Miralax and that can aggravate things. I use the stores generic by the way cheaper! It has been a huge help for my condition.

Yes miralax definitely works differently with different people like vin said. I started at twice a day then had a little diareah then switched to once a day. Then I found i could take it twice a day if I ate something more hearty in morning other than cereal, like quinoa. Now I eat hearty and take it twice a day. I could probably get away with just taking it at lunch, but I take as much as I can just in case as long as poop doesn't get too loose. Tomoro night I'm going to eat some fish! I wouldn't dare eat fish before miralax lol

Thanks Delasam and Vin. That's a huge help. I do drink a lot of water (I mean a LOT) and eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Recently I started watching my diet closely and added more fiber. The first week or so has been great with soft easy stools. But again the last couple days have been kind of bad. My stool was not soft enough and fissure is flaring up again. Surprisingly there has been no change in my diet/water intake or any change in my lifestyle either. I don't know what's happening. I guess its time I start taking Miralax!!

I hear what you are saying about becoming dependent on it. My plan is when I finally get this thing under control is to slowly ween off it.

I just bought Miralax today and the bottle clearly says "use no more than 7 days". Now I am thinking I will not use it every day - probably every other day or once in two days. How many days does the effect of Miralax stay after you stop taking it or take a break? Any idea?

The directions on the bottle are just a guideline. If your doctor recommended it for daily use don't be afraid to use it. Miralax isn't absorbed by your body at all, it just draws water into your colon to soften the stool. I didn't listen to my doctor when he first told me too to take it, I waited a year and I wound up with a fissure and LIS that didn't work. It's your choice.. If you have a fissure or other bowel problems and there is a product that can help you and works for you why wouldn't you want the help. I'm just happy it's available. Remember with any stool softener or laxative drink plenty of water. Your dosage may be different than someone else's too. Some people get by with one dose a day others take more. You have to experiment to find what works for you.

I have been taking the 17g capful in morning and again at night per my crs. He said take it forever if it helps. He said it is safe.im just gonna take it once at lunch or dinner today though, because I think it dehydrates me a bit at night.
