neosporin good or bad?

Postby afugh!! » 07 Sep 2009, 04:49

Found a tube under the sink but too scared to try it.Kind of tempting since its an antibiotic and it says pain relief on the label.

Personally I don't think it could hurt. But I also wouldn't expect it to do too much for fissure pain. I recall you mentioning that your fissure usually doesn't cause the traditional extreme pain during a BM, though, so maybe it's worth a shot. I'm pretty sure I've read about others trying Neosporin for fissures, just don't get your hopes up is all.

Well lately I've been getting a little pain down there at night but luckily it goes away after a nights rest and great that I still don't get any during BM's,I'll give it a shot tonight before bed.

Ok I just checked and I have also some of the Neosporin "with Pain Relief." I used to use on fresh tattoos once in a while (although I stopped as it's not the best thing for healing tattoos). Anyway the ingredient in mine looks like pramoxine hydrochloride, the same stuff that's combined with hydrocortisone in the product Proctofoam. Proctofoam is commonly used for hemorrhoids and as far as I know it's not very effective for fissures. If you indeed have a fissure maybe it'll provide some relief for a short while (it temporarily reduces inflammation) but I don't think it'll do much to promote long term healing. Hope I'm wrong, though, good luck!

Eh I never bothered using it but since you say it has hydrocortisone in it I probably won't use it,nice work on the research though.

Yup I'm getting some improvements. Hard to say if they'll last though. It's kind of day to day, overall the situation has been more manageable the last week or so, but it's hard to be too confident. But yeah I think the ointments are definitely helping to some extent :)
I don't think Neosporin has hydrocortisone, at least the one I have doesn't. It has praxomine which is some other kind of topical analgesic. Could be worth a try, but I'd think even if it did something, it'd be more of a short term patch versus a long term fix.

Thats good to here NG,mine seems to be in neutral for the moment, haven't had any bleeding for a over a week now and I haven't had any spasming since last friday. Ya I figure its only gonna be a short term thing with the neosporin but for some reason I'm still hesitant on trying it,my surgeon appt. is next week so I'm just hanging on without any weapons but the sitz bath.

If you're just looking for something for a bit of pain relief, I'd suggest an OTC product called Nupercainal. That's the brand name. The active ingredient is called dibucaine. It works pretty well for topical pain relief and is designed for rectal use. The tube looks like this:

Not all drug stores carry it but Walgreens definitely does. Runs about $12 a tube and it works pretty well for me when I know I'm about to have a painful BM. I would think any of the "caine" pain relievers will help the most. The other popular one is lidocaine, I have some in a compound ointment my physician prescribed to me, but you can also buy it online and OTC in various concentrations. Most local stores I checked like Walgreens and Long's Drugs either carry it only as a special order item or in concentrations no higher than 2%, but you can find 5% lidocaine online in rectal gels. They'll all kill pain but I don't think any of them will do much for the underlying condition.
