Postby owmybum » 20 Dec 2014, 04:04

My dr has prescribed me some gabapentin to try and help with my pain. I'm a bit scared to start it.... Has anyone had any experience with it??

I have heard it can give mental fog and that you need to keep upping the dose as your body gets used to it. I have also heard that constipation is a side effect so extra fiber/stool softener may be required. I haven't tried it myself but I have some here as I was prescribed it for sciatica years ago. I have often thought of trying it for my chronic pelvic pain and more recently the fissure pain. I believe it works mainly on nerve pain. It may just help in these situations as I think our nerves go crazy after being in so much pain for so long.

I work in medicine, Gabbapentin is a last line of defense for pain management - not one of the best IMO can cause constipation if taken regularly, muzzyness and can make you tired and lethargic. but it is a very efficient pain killer.
Suffering since June 2013

Methods tried:
GTN cream - migraines!
Manuka Honey / Coconut oil / Aloe
tag excision X 2, botox x 3
Dilatiazem
dilatation 2 X daily + Retin-C Vitamin Scar Treatment Oil 2 X daily - best thing ever.
Now pain free 2/7/21

Thankyou both.

Fissurefrustration.... What would be a better option? I was given the choice of three... Ampitriptoline, gabapentin or one that I can't remember but began preg...... Something.

I take movicol, so I'm not too worried about constipation.

Was the last pregabalin? They all have their benefits but drug of choice here is gabapentin or amitryptaline :-)

Yes, it was pregabalin .....
I will see how I go with the gabapentin for a few days. I go back to see my doc on wed, so if it doesn't agree with me then I think I'll switch to ampitriptoline .

Have you used any?

I tried gabbapentin after my first AF but I didnt like the drowsy side effects, and after a long think I decided I'd rather know the pain i was in which would let me know how well I was healing especially when going to the loo... didn't want to be under a falce pretense that I was healing and do more damage!
