Please recommend best stool softener supplement in UK

Postby mr_inconspicuous » 07 Feb 2015, 18:34

Hi,

What is the best supplement to take? I have great difficulty swallowing tablets/capsules so it would have to be in liquid form. I've read that magnesium citrate is very good but you can't seem to buy it in the UK. I've been using fibregel but it's not really helping.

Thanks

Movicol is the one I use. It's a powder you mix with water and drink. Start with one sachet.... But give it a couple of days to start working. The lemon and lime flavour is the best.
You could also try lactulose.
You can buy these from any chemist.

A lot of people use and recommend movicol.
Fibogel has soluble dietary fibre in it - it can help with BMs, but you have to take it with plenty of water, because it draws water into your gut (hence the stools become soft). Also, it can really bulk up your stools because of the extra volume of the fibre. If that doesn't bother you, good. But if you want small stools (most of us do), I would take OMB's recommendations.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Hey there Mr Inconspicuous you're in luck! I just took a look at the Amazon UK website and they sell the Natural Calm powder magnesium citrate. It's a great product. The pricing includes postage, and costwise it is pretty much the same one would pay in North America. There are a few sellers with various prices so watch out, also, for more money you can get the larger tub. I'd say give it a try. Aside from helping with softer stools, it is an all round very relaxing tonic.

Had movicol but made me feel sick. Lactulose is good for softening stools but as its a laxative it causes spasms in your sphincter not good for healing.

I recommend fibogel as its quick acting. My sister is a continence nurse and she would say the same.

I thought it was just me

yes the lactulose caused spasms in my spinchter and made stool difficult to pass so it would get stuck.

Has anyone used Dulcoease?

Is Fibogel just the same as eating a bowl of Albran cereal? Or would it be noticably better?

I was looking for a stool softener on Amazon but not sure what to go for (can't swallow capsules)

Thanks

Movicol. I started taking 1 sachet at a random time in afternoon, drink lots of water and continue until AF gets cured.

I live in Germany and its called by the same name here in Europe.
