itching

Postby hurtybotty » 31 Mar 2015, 11:17

Hi all, just wondering if anyone else is suffering with unbearable itching! I had Lis surgery and a heamhorroid removed 2 weeks ago now and although initially things seemed to be healing well, I've developed the most unbearable itching down there. Is this normal, is there anything i can use to ease it and will it go away anytime soon? I really hope so cos it's driving me mad! Any advice would be appreciated!

I had my LIS two months ago, and had the same experience. I started to become unbearably itchy in the third week (maybe mid second week?), but it only lasted for about 4 or 5 days. I hope that yours disappears soon too!

Have been totally pain-free since the end of week three and still cannot believe how much my whole life has changed. I hope that you can say the same soon too.

Hi Hurtybotty, I'm so glad you are pain-free! That is tremendous.
However, as I know well, itching is almost as bad as pain, and can drive you mad!

Are you using any cream, ointment, wet-wipes or other cleansers that you might be sensitive to? You should avoid alcohol based wipes for example, and diltiazem has become notorious on this forum for causing itchy rash.

Try using an ice pack wrapped in soft cloth to soothe the itch.
Also, I wonder if benedryl might help? If it does, that suggests an allergy is involved. Ask your doctor or a pharmacist if it's OK to take benedryl.

Good luck!
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Oh the itching is AWFUL! The worst thing about it is that pain killers don't really work on it. Ice is a great idea though. I'll have to try that next time (hopefully there won't be a next time though;)

I always try to tell myself it means healing. Not sure if it's true but it seems to happen most when I think I am making progress.

Thanks for all the replies and the advice, still itching badly (especially at night!). I've stopped using the do!tiazem because that just seems to make it worse but find good old Sudocrem quite helpful! I keep telling myself it's a good sign because it means it's healing , fingers crossed I'm right!

I never used diltiazem after surgery, but when I had used it in the past it had caused itchiness. And yes, my itching post-LIS was much worse at night. I hope that yours really diminishes quickly, now that you've stopped the diltiazem. How are you doing otherwise? Are you having much pain still? I hope not.
