Looking for fissure insight

Postby beckyvp » 13 Jul 2017, 12:48

Hi! I'm at wits end and turned to this support group for some insight. I've been dealing with fissure pain for over a year now. I went to the doctor with severe anxiety thinking I had cancer because I would see blood when I would wipe after BM's. They referred me to a surgeon who did a colonoscopy that came out clear. He diagnosed me with fissures but said they look as if they were healing so he didn't think I needed surgery. He gave me the cream but that just gave me a headache and offered very little relief. As of right now my symptoms are: A feeling as if my anus wont relax enough to let stool pass and if my stool isn't extremely soft then it feels as if it's "tearing" and almost always has a slight burning feeling. I'm at wits end, I have an appt with my family doctor next week and i'm going to ask him to refer me to a specialist... I feel because this is now considered "chronic" that these are not going to heal on their own. I guess more than anything I'm wondering if my symptoms still sound like they are fissure related.

Sounds like a typical fissure to me.

Which cream did you use? I had problems with nitro and diltiazem, but nifedipine has worked well.

Make sure to ask for a Colorectal Surgeon, because they treat these MUCH better than Gastroenterologists and General Surgeons. I went through multiple GIs before I got to a CRS that helped me.

If you've had this for over a year, I'm guessing that you'll need surgery. I had my last fissure for about 15 months and my CRS said that there was no way that it would've healed on its own.
8/09 - 12/10: fissure, cured by LIS/fissurectomy
1/17 - present: fissure/hemms, healed but pain remained, 3 CRSs (nifedipine, infrared coag) were no help, cold dilating >= 1" helped but still have pain when sitting

I don't remember the name of the cream :/ i will definitely ask for a colorectal surgeon. I'm relieved that you think it's typical fissure symptoms and I figured I'll prob need surgery to correct it but at this point I'm just ready to move on with life ugh!

Beckyvp....my fissure started about May 2017...i finally went a CRS last Monday...had surgery on last Thursday...be prepared for a rather lengthy recovery...if it is indeed a fissure common medical practice is to try and heal it with diet, salves. baths etc. Once it is labeled as "acute" they schedule surgery. Sounds like you may be close. Your family dr can help u find a CRS...but do your own research...make sure he has done the procedure 1000's of times..Ask him what exactly the procedure is... ask him if he uses Exparel...a local nonnarcotic analgesic...its awesome...it lasts for 3 days...he is probably going to prescribe percocet...use it...but get away from it ASAP as its constipating which fuels the fire so to speak....Im post surgery 1 week today..and im glad to report that im back to ibuprophen...still having spasms...still some blood...but think Im on my way out of the woods...i know the pain your going thru...my surgeon recommended an enema prior to surgery....which i tried...but the pain limited my success...if i were to do it again...i would cleanse my colon to the best of my ability...and then do it again...a little preop discomfort will go a long way in saving you postop discomfort...and i believe allow you to heal quicker...its all that pushing that keeps reopening the tear...good luck and let us know your progress
