Is Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (PEG) really safe?

Postby John667 » 03 Dec 2018, 14:47

I've read some articles and texts (like this one: https://www.pharmamedtechbi.com/~/media ... 120603.pdf) about PEG been unsafe for children, with children getting neuro-psychiatric problems after taking it. It seems a certain percentage of the product goes into the body (crosses intestinal walls) and it can create problems.

I've been using this product for nearly two weeks now and not feeling very well. Feeling more depressed and not too good in general.

Was wondering if anyone could relate and if it is worth it to continue.

Thanks

I only used it briefly, because I don't believe that it is good to use long term (despite the medical profession usually saying otherwise).

For how long did you use it and how did you feel while using it?

Same thing here, I don't believe eating plastic will ever be safe long-term, but I'm feeling desesperate. I had some improvement at first on a no-gluten diet, but it came back with a vengence. For the last 2 months, I did not have any BM that wasn't at least a bit painful.

I didn't have any bad symptoms, and felt generally well, but after reading a LOT about the product, knew that I wouldn't take it for long.

Would someone recommend anything beside PEG for my anal fissure?

PEG (Miralax, Emolax, etc.) gives me anxiety and weird depression-like symptoms.
Psyllium fibers (Metamucil) is too bulky, so it makes me go too often, worsening the problem.
Inulin (Benefiber) gives me lots of gas and bloating.

Really don't know what to do...

When I eat too many grapes, or too much watermelon, I tend to get sloppy stool (which I don't want). Maybe those will help "move" you?

I can try, but can't imagine eating those daily... would be expensive in winter too! ;)

I've been on PEG - with its various brand names Miralax, Movicol, Macrogol, etc. - for nearly 4 years, and haven't noticed any significant side effects. I think it's fairly safe.
