Anal pain

Postby Jacaranda » 24 Jul 2024, 07:04

Hello I'm a newbie here. Found this forum so helpful, so comforting to identify with so many on here. Been in varying degrees of pain and discomfort for the past 5 months. I'm in the UK and decided to seek a private colorectal consultant after unsuccessfully going down the GP route. Managed to have a MRI scan last April and as a result now down to have surgery. It might sound strange but I've had my pre-assessment done over 2 weeks ago but nobody has actually explained what is going to happen. The last time I spoke, over the phone, the CRS mentioned a possible abscess and maybe a superficial fistula stating it'll probably take 10-15 mins under GA. What might well be an everyday event to him is quite a big deal on the other side of the fence. Like a lot of people here I suffer daily with discomfort and pain. I do try to walk maybe a mile or two a day but even standing can be a challenge.
I used to have regular BM's but they are something I almost come to dread. Such a volatile situation I really don't know from day to day how I'm going to feel but can guarantee some pain at some stage through the day.

Hello,

your story seems to be pretty much what most of us experience(d). Knowing that doesn't really help coping with the unbearable pain but at least you know that other people have "been there and done that".

We have all devised our own small rituals to mitigate the pain, but I'm afraid that in this initial, acute phase - nothing helps. You just have to go through it, untill it becomes tolerable and learn to live with it.

Some people had luck with surgeries, some had luck for some time and then it returned back after few years.

My general advise would be to reduce number of BMs, try to find the food that you have least problems during BMs, sitzbaths.

Keep us informed abou your progress?

Hello pjole, thanks for replying. You are quite correct in how we all try to manage with what we are presented with. It indeed is comforting to know your not alone in your predicament. I think one of my main problems is the relentlessness of the discomfort/pain day in day out. Strangely enough the best time is at night when generally it doesn't disturb my sleep too much. However every morning around 4-5 am I get a dull ache that then sets a precedence for the forthcoming day. I spend way too long sitting to try and escape the discomfort. It certainly doesn't help the anxiety caused by the situation. Standing and walking can be difficult. I do use coconut oil, hydrocortisone and all the other ointments that are supposed to help but not sure they have helped. I have also used a sitz bath but find no relief using it. I must admit my BM's used to be very regular but even they are all over the shop. I do take Ducloease from time to time to help soften things. I will send updates of my progression including my upcoming surgery (still no date). Thanks for listening.
