GI xray

Postby juney » 18 Jun 2008, 22:46

i'm having an upper GI xray done on friday. has anyone had this done? i can't eat anything from midnight the night before, and i have to swallow some kind of liquid once i get there. i had this scheduled last month when i was considering having another surgery, and i figure i might as well just go ahead w/ it even though i'm feeling decent now. i'd asked my dr for the referral back when i was freaked out about having crohns. i have no symptoms at all, but i'm still worried they'll find something. i'm a typical paranoid fissure-sufferer. lol.
anyone have any info about this procedure?

Juney -
I have never had this done, but good luck. When I worked in the hospital, patients would tell me how nasty the contrast was to drink. I hope you have a strong stomach! :)
Good luck! I am sure everything will go smoothly!

Hi Juney Image ,
I had to drink the stuff before my surgery last summer. It is a little nasty but it all stayed down. Make sure to drink lots of water afterwards to flush the stuff out of your body.
I thought the golytly (Ha! Image ) was much worse for me.

Golightly is terrible! It was coming out of both end when I was drinking that! :)
Jo - That picture is so funny! My baby always walks around and says "llama". It was one of his first words - he has a llama stuffed animal!:)

Juney,
I guess I might be considered an expert as I have had my upper GI tract x-rayed three times over a period of years/decades. The last time was over 15 years ago because of intense upper stomach pain , and I was convinced at that time I had gall stones/a gallbladder prob. (I didn't) I have never had a prob drinking the substance in fact it felt soothing at the time(s) to my tummy. Did cause me constipation coming out, however. My last x-ray was so long ago that they are possibly even using something better to drink. Good luck and let us know how it goes. In the vast array of GI procedures, I would consider it a very easy test.

Hi Jen,
Yes the Golightly is terrible, it was coming up one end and going out the other for me also! Yuk! I had to do it again in February and it stayed down because I started much earlier in the day and drank it much slower than they said. That helped. I also sucked on jolly rancher candies every time I took a drink, that definitely helped me get through it.
I really thought the barium stuff tasted better than the golightly.
Thanks Jen. Babies are so adorable, Llama sounds like Mama, did he say Mama Image too? I miss having a baby in the house. How old is he?

thanks guys! i'm convinced that it's gonna be pretty simple. i'll make sure to drink tons of water or double up on the MOM so i don't have any problems w/ it going thru my system. i'm having it done at 8am so luckily i don't have long to wait to eat and drink :D

Juney - GOOD LUCK Image I am sure everything will be fine. I am so excited that you have been feeling great lately. Keep us posted!
Jo - Jolly ranchers - What an awsome idea! I will have to keep that in mind for the next time I have a colonoscopy. I hope I am blessed with good health and don't have to have another one until I am 50 (I think thats when its recomended). So in the meantime, I hope they can invent better tasting stuff in the next 20+ years.
My baby is 17 months old. I always know how old my fissure is too since they are the same age! He says mama too, but he knows the difference between llama and mama. I will tell him to bring me his llama and he gets his stuffed llama for me - too cute! :adorable:
How are you doing lately? Are you pain free yet hopefully? :snn:
