Glutamine

Postby Jen » 02 Aug 2008, 08:00

Has anyone ever taken this? My CRS gave it for me to take until my LIS. It is a suppository. However, I have never even heard of it until yesterday. I got it at the compounding pharmacy. He wants me to use it along with my nitro.

I too glutamine tablets some while I had my fissure. Gosh, now I cannot remember exactly what they did, that was two years ago!
BTW Jen, no need to be scared. The surgery is no worse than the fissure, probably less so.

Thanks Kim!
I am taking it in a soppository form at night. My morning BM hurt, but was not as bad as I expected and I am wondering if the glutamine had something to do with it.

I think there is some evidence that it does help. It certainly can't hurt, it's just an amino acid. I hope it does!

Wow-I want to know all about this! If it can help after bms with the pain. Let me go google :google: and see what I can find. Maybe it is an amino acid that helps with tissue repair and integrity???

Lecia -

i don't know too much about the stuff but here is some info...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine

I never heard of it until yesterday at my CRS office. It is too soon to tell if the stuff works, but my BM was not as bad as it could have been this morning.

Thanks for the link, Jen. I will check it out-your doctor sounds very knowledgable and willing to try things. I will mention this to my CRS. Maybe I can use it on the outside.

Wow-that sounds like something I need. I think I will get some oral supplements. I am a vegan (except for ice cream) and I know I need to up my protein. My albumin and bun are very low and one of my doctors said I am malnourished even though I eat very healthily.

Lecia - Ask for the suppositories if you think your butt can handel it. My compounding pharmacy gave me 2.5%. I'll let you know how it works in the weeks to come.

BTW - I could NEVER give up ice cream either (or sushi)!!!

The only thing is that Glut. is non-essential amino acid which means that it can be produced by our body and we do not need to take it as a food to get it . BUT - extra supplementation may indeed help - no harm in trying - one can never have an overdose of protein LOL.
Jen - your CRS is definitely "butt guru" , as you always stated - you are immensely lucky to find him !!! If he was my CRS I would never question his decisions EVEN though I do not trust doctors any more ! Can you tell us what is his name so he can be here placed in the "Hall of CRS Fame " ??? Give him a hug in my name next time you see him (before the exam, of course LOL ) !!!
