Is it normal to bleed in the tub???

Postby Guest » 27 May 2007, 15:29

Hi~
I have been diagnosed with a fissure by two doctors. One did a sigmoidoscopy and saw it.... but I have never bled....Well, I have taken two soaky baths today with chamomile salts.... and when I drained the tub... there was blood in it-- both times.
Is this normal?
What can I do to stop it? I have tucks suppositories and have been using nitro-gel... but the nitro-gel kinda burns my intestines.... is this normal? My GI doc won't see me anymore and said my family doc would have to handle it... and she won't give me that compounded ointment that you all talk about b/c she has never heard of it.
So, what I want to know is.... is the bleeding normal (I have had this fissure about five mos /w no bleeding)
and is it normal for nitro-gel to burn your backside?
PLEASE HELP

Hi Misti,
I think you need to see a colo-rectal surgeon. I think this is really out of a GI and GP doctor's expertise. I am a little worried about your bleeding in the bathtub. Usually with the fissure the bleeding is in the toilet after going to the bathroom and on the tp. Do you get in the tub right after going to the bathroom? Maybe it is from that. A little bit of blood can look like a lot in water too.
I am not sure about Nitro-gel causing burning but you know, every one is different so it is possible. I hope you can find a colo-rectal doctor to see. They are going to have a wider array of things to try.
Hope you are doing okay!

misti,
i hope you are using the nitro in the right place. it is supposed to be used on the anus. not sure why that would cause intestine pain.

Well, I had been putting nitropaste in the wrong place.... I thought you put it like inside.... not just on the anus.... that could be causing the bleeding... i live in a very very small town and there are not colo-rectal specialists here.... what do you call those type of doctors? Like a stomach doc is an gastroenterologist.... do I need to find a proctologist? As long as I know that this won't kill me.... I will live with it... I am SICK of doctors. They all think that b/c I am bipolar that nothing is wrong with me. It is terrible. As for bleeding, I do not bleed when I go to the bathroom--- I am just in terrible pain.... all the time... I have had a sigmoidoscopy and my family doctor used an anuscope and both said I had a fissure..... I am 34 and my uncle died of colon cancer.... I hope my docs have it right.

I wish I knew more about the application of the nitroglycerin, but I have had no experience with it.
You are not the first AF sufferer to find blood in the water...had you just had a BM? That could be why. You need to call whichever DR (and I know you are sick of them!!) and find out exactly how they intend for you to apply the cream.
If you didn't just use the bathroom and bled in the bath, I would either let my doctor know or find a doctor who will be sympathetic to your plight. With your family history you need reassurances.

I think the nitro gel burning your bum is sort of common, but do you mean it burns a bit when you apply it? If so, that happened to me as well when I used it.
There are some things you can do to prevent bleeding - for me I had to make lots of changes in my diet (e.g. eating more fibre, drinking loads of water & liquids, and having more raw fruit & boiled veggies). It also really helps to take a stool softener - my bleeding didn't really stop until I started taking this. It also helps to use baby wipes (they're a bit moist) instead of toilet paper after a BM. I think it's also best to try to find another doctor and ask about that, as normally bleeding after a BM or during is common but I'm not sure about in the tub. It's always good to try and find a professional and check with them - it'll make you feel a lot better having cleared it up as well.
I'm a beginner aswell so all the people above here know much more than me! It'll probably also make you feel great to keep posting here with any questions you have - it's helped me a lot! :)

Kitty,
I am not sure where you are from, and it seems to me that different terms are used for Docs specializing in different areas in different places, but I am pretty sure that you do need to see a proctologist. I think they can help you.
GOD Bless You!!
