Tucks suppositories vs. Preparation H suppositories

Postby Guest » 01 Apr 2010, 10:55

Hi,
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether Tucks suppositories or Prep H ones are better? The ingredients are actually quite different but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or information on this.
I've used Prep H with good effect most of the time, but sometimes even they don't work so I was wondering about the Tucks brand.
Thanks!

Neither will help you with a fissure , unfortunately : (((
They both are formulated for hemorrhoids.

I agree with Fiss, they are for hemorrhoids only, I wouldn't recommend inserting any of them up your anus if you have a fissure as this will only aggravate the condition

Yup I'll 3rd Fiss and Steve, both are basically useless against fissures. If you're still early on in your fissure battle you should ask your doctor about one of the first line treatment ointments used for fissures:
0.2% nitroglycerin
0.2% nifedipine
2% diltiazem

Thank you all for your replies. That is really interesting as I've been using the Prep H suppositories and they've been working really well. For a long time I assumed I had hemorrhoids, but I went to a hemorrhoids expert who listened to my symptoms and then performed an exam and concluded that I did not have hemorrhoids, but had fissures.
But I must say what is puzzling about the fissures diagnosis is 1) that my primary sympton is itching, not pain; and 2) it comes on primarily at night, not after bowel movements; and 3) it responds well to Prep H suppositories.
Are these symptoms consistent with fissures, or do you think it is something else? I asked the doctor specifically about pinworm (because of the night itching), and he said it wasn't that as it wouldn't go away after an episode (7-10 days) and then come back a month or two later.
Any thoughts?
Thank you! It is so hard to get good information on these conditions!

Could you get a second opinion? Sounds to me more like hemrrhoids or something else other than AF's!!

It doesn't sound like a fissure to me, but fissures can be enigmatic so I don't think it's possible to say that it's absolutely not a fissure, either. Did the doctor actually see the fissure or did he just go by symptoms?

I would go for a second opinion ASAP !
It does not sound as a classical fissure - they hurt like hell. Some people have a superficial skin cracks that are kind of located more "outside" and could maybe cause symptoms that you have  , kind of more like a skin irritation.
Itching is always connected with inflammation , and inflammation can be caused physical injury, allergy, etc.
It would be very important that you get correct diagnosis so that you can apply correct medication.
If your itching is superficial and you have no inside pain or terrible pain during bowel movement, than your irritation is most probably situated outside of the anus and than cooling agents like Tucks can calm it down, of course and if Prep-H has cortisone inside (as I think new creams do), than it also has anti-inflammatory effect and it helps that way.
Definitely go to another doctor to confirm the diagnosis and possibly GI specialist too !
You definitely do not have typical anal fissure symptoms ...

Thank you all one again for your replies -- the are very, very helpful. The itching isn't more outside -- it is a very deep, annoying itch that prevents me from sleeping entirely. But you're right: it's mostly itching, not pain, and that makes the fissures diagnosis puzzling.
The doctor was a hemmorhoids expert, and he evaluated me very extensively (looked inside with some kind of special camera). It was in his interest for my problem to be hemmorhoids, as that would allow him to do a procedure (using a kind of UV blast to burn them off), so the fact that he said it wasn't hemmorhoids I think is pretty reliable.
It was in this context that he said it was likely fissures. I guess I'm still curious if it is pinworms -- do you guys know if they can go away for a few months, then come back for an episode of 7-10 days, then go away again, all without any direct treatment of them?
Thanks again!

I have no knowledge about intestinal parasites life-cycle , but you can google it very easily !!!! And why you don't go to a GP and give a stool sample - you will know the result in the matter of days !Image
If your doctor said "sounds like fissure" and did not see it or found tell-tale skin-tag or inflammation and you had NO horrible pain during the real scope that he did on you - than I am even more certain it might not be a fissure - but since I can not examine you LOL - it is the best that you go to a CRS who is good with ALL butt problems, not just hemorrhoids.
I wish you the best of luck !
