Prosthetic sphincter... If only!

Postby StevePain » 11 Feb 2011, 03:50

Hi all..
This is what I'm hoping for in the future, a kind of rubber type sphincter and artificial anal mucosa that replaces patients sphincter and mucosal tissue due to tears and fissures etc, I know they already make an artificial sphincter to combat fecal incontinence:
http://www.surgeryencyclopedia.com/A-Ce/Artificial-Sphincter-Insertion.html
So maybe it's just a matter of time before they concentrate on other ano-rectal conditions such as fissures and hemmorhoids, replacing the whole inside of the anus would be massive (if at all possible) but the way surgical procedures are advancing, who knows?
I believe that by replacing the internal sphincter with a rubber type inflatable one (like the fecal incontinence one) and the anal mucosa with a prosthetic type would be the end of anal pain forever!
I wouldn't hesitate having that type of surgery if it meant the end of fissure and anal pain.
Here's hoping...

Steve,
Hopefully there will be advancements in this area for people who aren't able to heal...
I think you are going to be fine though. I know you must be desperate at this point with all the mess you have been through, but I think it's just a matter of time before this is over with for you.
Is your butt doing any better?

Hi dawn, I'm up and down at the moment, I reckon it's gonna be a long slog for me, as stated in another post I'm prepared to give another 6 months for this thing to heal which by that time I'll be 1 year post-op, if after that time I'm not better then I'll be seeking another surgery.

Hey Steve,
I didn't see the other post but I think that would be a good idea. Things may just be going a little slow and bumpy for you, but I definitely think a little time wont hurt and there's no need to jump into another LIS too fast. Remember Juney's post. I think she regretted not giving the first one more time....

Yeah that's right, I still can't believe Juney suffered so much, and she did regret not giving the first one more time, it's a shame she isn't still around, I would of loved a chat with her.

It was heart breaking especially at her age. I wish she was still around too. I thought I read the botox was helping her.

I've done a lot of reading through older posts here too. Juney's story bothers me a lot, especially since we don't know the final outcome for her. But it makes me wonder...how does a surgeon decide what technique to use? You'd hope they'd be skilled enough to look at you and say, oh this is a simple case, just an LIS, or--oh, this is never going to heal without an anoplasty.
Juney had two LIS, fissurectomy, and botox. Why not an anoplasty? I thought that was the last resort after LIS failed.
Another member, KerrBerr, had a great outcome with anoplasty. And callmecrazy seems to be doing well...maybe it's just luck getting the right surgeon for you, who can perform the right surgery for you. Hang in there Steve!

I did a lot of reading when I first joined but didn't remember Juney's story. So I went I read it. Wow, I hope she is ok.
Steve - Hang in there. I hope that you find some relief soon. I agree giving the first LIS some more time. Everybody is so different in terms of recovery.
