I do think it's reasonable -- if the government is giving you free money and benefits, they should have the right to make sure you aren't spending it on drugs. Goodness knows there are enough people out there who can't afford dinner for their children but can somehow afford crack rocks every day.
One exception here for me: marijuana. IMO (and obviously IMO only since I'm a huge unashamed California hippy) it's such a total joke that marijuana is even considered an illegal drug that I would oppose drug testing for marijuana under pretty much all circumstances except for when driving, flying a plane, performing a surgery, etc (basically anything where being drunk wouldn't be a hot idea either).
One other caveat: I also don't feel that drug testing -- whether it be for employment or welfare -- is really all that effective. Most people stay clean long enough for the drugs to leave their system, then start using again as soon as the tests are over. Also there are tons of masking agents that can be used, and many cheaper tests are not designed to pick them up. The most effective drug testing IMO is random testing (commonly used in construction industries for example), and even then, there are still ways to cheat. Overall I think the concept makes sense, but there are way too many ways to game the system in practice.
Have you ever fantasized about dropping everything, packing up a backpack, and just leaving your entire life behind? Realistically, do you think you would ever do it? Why or why not?
