23 Days to go.....

Postby ren0318 » 01 Aug 2011, 18:53

Well just like clock work, I went 2 weeks and 2 days without any pain, then yesterday....well RIP...again!! OMGOSH! I never thought I would say that I can't wait to have my surgery, but I can't wait to have my surgery. I've of course been in pain all day yesterday and today....I called our benefits department today to start my paperwork for being off. I have to go to the Docs office tomorrow to sign my consent for the procedure. I wish the surgery was tomorrow, just ready to be done with this mess!
My doctor said they would be putting me asleep, do you know if it's like the kind of "sleep" I got with my colonscopy? Or the type of sleep you have for major surgery? I forgot to ask my doc and she's on baby leave for another 2 weeks. I have my pre-op testing next Tuesday at my family doctors. How long were you at the hospital the day of your sugery? How long does the surgery take? I know I'm going to be pretty groggy afterwards, I pray that I can just be up for an hour that evening, my daughter is starting Jr. High and the day of my surgery is the night of her orientation, I hate that I may not be able to go Image
Ok enough question for now, I'm sure I'll think of more soon...Hope everyone is feeling good tonight,
Ren

Hey Ren,
Nothing like a re-tear to get us moving on the surgery,Lol.
Laying all jokes aside I am sorry and I know it is painful and frustrating and the wait for the surgery can seem like a life time when you are in pain.
I think you've made a good decision to get the LIS. I felt the same way before my surgery. I had enough and just wanted it over.
Ren, I know it's not easy to miss out on your daughters orientation, but there's a pretty good chance you may not be able or need to go. I know it sucks, but you have to take care of yourself. Image
I was put to sleep for my LIS (twilight), knocked out, didn't know a thing kind of sleep. You may need to discuss with your CRS what type of anesthesia will be used before your procedure, because all aren't the same.
I think I was at the hospital for a total of 3hrs. I believe the procedure itself took about 20 minutes- give or take a few. It's really a simple/quick procedure.

Yo yo yo Ren!
Definitely check with your doctor on the type of sedation/anesthesia they'll be using for the procedure if you're not sure. Protocol differs from doctor to doctor so it's anyone's guess.
Usually it's done under conscious sedation using Fentanyl + Versed, or under MAC anesthesia using propofol. If the doctor said they'll be "putting you asleep" then I'd wager it's the latter, but only the attending physician (and whichever anesthesiologist winds up being there) would know for sure. If you're not a super anxious type then it may not matter, but I'm a worry wart so I always like to know ahead of time so I know what to expect :)
It probably won't be the exact same type of anesthesia used for major surgeries though. That kind requires intubation and it seems doubtful that would be used for LIS, fissurectomy, skin tag removal, or whichever procedure you're having (I may have overlooked it but I didn't see details).
I had just LIS and, like Dawn (who had more done than just LIS if I recall right), was also at the hospital for maybe 3 hours or so. The surgery itself is a small part of that only. The rest is all prep, recovery room waiting, etc. Mine was done under MAC anesthesia with Propofol and went very smoothly (unlike a previous colonoscopy where I only got conscious sedation and woke up midway through Image).
I would concur that there's a good chance you'll miss your daughter's school event that evening. I'd hope for the best and expect the worst there, honestly. After I had LIS, I actually felt GREAT for the rest of that day. I didn't feel discomfort or what I could really call post-surgical pain until the next day. But I was definitely tired, and my sphincter was also VERY lax so sometimes ummm "accidents" could happen.
In other words: I think you might be pretty worn out after the procedure, and even if you're not, it's very likely that you'll either be in some pain or just otherwise not be up for the event. It's not really the grogginess that I think will be an issue, more that walking and/or sitting probably won't be terribly comfortable. Better to play it safe and consider it a VERY pleasant surprise if you do wind up making it, IMO.

My LIS and fissurectomy was done using general anesthesia. The used an LMA which is a laryngeal mask airway. It is similar to the intubation tube but it is not inserted as far into your airway. They also used the propofol the same used for the majority of surgeries.

Thanks gang! One more question, when they "cut" the sphincter, is it cut for life? Or does it grow back together? (I know probably a silly question), and is the sphincter right at the opening of the anus? I'm sorry, now weird thoughts are coming into my head!
Thanks ren

Ren,
They cut the internal (inside) sphincter. It's not cut for life, but will cause the resting pressure(the tightness) to be less than it was prior to LIS. Your sphincter will be looser right after LIS and tighten a little over time but isn't suppose to ever be as tight as it was before LIS.
It's really pretty awesome how much easier going to the bathroom is after LIS. Things are just looser and once you relax to go, they seem to come out quicker and easier.

Hey Ren! I'm so glad your surgery is scheduled now. I know what you mean about not wanting surgery and wishing they'd do it tomorrow! I was in that same place. You will be happy when it's done. The pain recovering is not worse than the pain of the fissure and I found that it was easier to cope with psychologically since I knew I was healing and not just trying to cope with pain every day. :D
