Magnesium advice

Postby Haley » 28 Nov 2011, 04:45

After reading these forums, I think I'd like to try magnesium to keep my BMs as soft as possible. Just a few questions, I'd really apprecaite your feedback:
1. Magnesium tablets or Milk of Magnesia? What's the real difference?
2. Can I become dependant? I became dependant on laxatives when I first got my fissure and it was a nightmare to shake.
3. How much should I take and when?
4. Are there any side effects?
5. So far, I'm having three glasses of prune juice a day and this REALLY helps but I sometimes need BMs even softer. Should I forget the Magnesium and just up the prune juice???
I'm scared to try anything new nowadays as I hate when something has a negative effect or I end up on the toilet all day! But... fortune favours the brave, right? I've heard really good things about magnesium. SO... I have MOM and the tablets here... will wait and see what you guys think before I take anything.
Wishing you comfortable! xx

1. Magnesium tablets or Milk of Magnesia? What's the real difference? Magnesium is an essential nutrient in the body, while milk of magnesia is a laxative and is harsher. They are all magnesium though.
2. Can I become dependant? I became dependant on laxatives when I first got my fissure and it was a nightmare to shake. Magnesium DV is 350mg, so try not to take beyond that with supplements and food intake. According to my CRS, taking any laxatives can make us dependent after some time.
3. How much should I take and when? Bcos magnesium is able to relax the muscles, it's good to take it an hrs after meals, and preferably just before you sleep. DV is 350mg, for me i was taking 400mg magnesium oxide for 3 months already and i'm good, helps me to have regular BM like clockwork.
4. Are there any side effects? For me no. Too much magnesium, i believe can cause diarrhea.
5. So far, I'm having three glasses of prune juice a day and this REALLY helps but I sometimes need BMs even softer. Should I forget the Magnesium and just up the prune juice??? For me, i have been taking half a glass of prune juice in the morning and a magnesium oxide 400mg before i sleep. So it's really up to you. I guess u shld try magnesium esp. if you have spasms now.

I second what dwarfs8 said. Magnesium has been a real life saver for me. Do not buy the cheap one, go to a good health food store and buy a known brand. Prior to Magnesium, I had very had BM’s. In fact, that is what got me here in the first place. Now I am like clock works and much softer. Wish I found out about this a few years ago! Just so you know, this is just one of the positives aspects of Magnesium. There is a great book which I bought used on Amazon for about $8.00 called the Magnesium Miracle . Very interesting and I believe will answer all your questions. Good luck!

I have not tried the Magnesium pills, but I take 1 1/2 tbsp of MOM every night before bed. It works like a charm, but I am having 2-3 BM's every morning. I only had 1 per day each morning before all this AF stuff. Now I think b/c I don't push and afraid to sit for too long. I am not eliminating everything at one time. My aunt has taken MOM for 11 years everynight and her CRS said it is safe. I have Miralax, and really want to try but I am scared to change anything right now, especially since my AF has reared it's ugly head again.
