how long can I use cortizone?

Postby buttgirl » 10 Oct 2007, 09:48

OK. so wierd things still happening down south. The hemmie-turned-fissure is almost healed, but I still have something weird going on in the rear area. After the second monring bm, I have a burning and raw sensation along my anal canal. I think it might be the scar still hurting and being irritated. So, I have been using 1-2 cortizone supositoroes per day. It is really helping curb the inflammation, and thus the burning, raw sensation--I felt almost normal on Sat. BUT I am afraid to use this for too long. I called the dr for some other anti-inflammatory suppositories, but those are not very effective at all.

So my question is does anyone know how long I can safely use the cortizone suppositories for?

I don't really know because I have gotten two different answers from CRSs. One said he has patients who use them on and off for a lifetime and he doesn't have any problem with that but the other one (who was in the same practice) said she limits their use.
I have used cortizone supps. on and off for about a year and I never knew it could be associated with thinning of the membranes. I would think at your current level for a few weeks the effects would be quite negligible. You could always cut back to one next month or when you feel like things have improved.
I wonder what is causing the inflammation though?

I wish I knew what was causing the inflammation. It's right at the verge of the anus/rectum. My CRS said he saw one small hemmie there, so i don't know if that could be causing the problem, or if the scar is inflaming, or if I gave myself a fissure there somehow, or if my anal membranes aren't producing enough mucous to make the poo come out smoothly, or what.

I have had all sorts of crazy ideas, like I wonder if anal dryness is something like vaginal dryness....

I can tell you though, that the days when I am on the cortizone, I feel almost normal, a slight pain in the tailbone after bm, but I can sit, ride my bike, etc... so I think I will keep on it for a while, until I feel completely better.

Yeah, stay on it. I think if it makes you feel close to normal, then you are doing something right!

Cortisone tends to thin the skin when used for prolonged periods of time. Use it for up to 2 weeks at a time and then take a week break from it before you start again. Thinning skin will not help a fissure.
