I thought toothpaste and soft serve icecream were similar in consistency?
Your doc's description sounds good...
i tend to be too soft, and want to bakc off the prune juice in a couple weeks.

I use both Metamucil (fiber supplement) and MiraLAX. I take them both in the morning, one heaping tablespoon of Metamucil and a capful of MiraLAX. That does it for me. I think adding prune juice would be overkill in my case.

What's the downside to the stool being too soft (i.e., like melted ice cream)?

As far as I can figure, the danger is that the sphincter doesn't get stretched enough and becomes accustomed to staying small and tight. So when you do have a 'normal' bm, you will likely tear.
