Movicol Substitute

Postby Two Years Gone » 30 Mar 2012, 11:51

Hi
Can anyone help me.
I am now allergic to Movicol. I have been taking it for 4 months - with great success.
Is there anything that works as well.
I have been given Ducosol to take but it burns my throat. I tried dulcoease and Lactulose and they do not work for me. Please advise.

Hi,
Have you tried prunes and/or prune juice?
I've heard that acacia fiber is nice too (not as bulky).

Hi Workingonit
I bought prune juice today. It is Sunsweet. Would it really work like Movicol and does it taste really bad. I am a bit nervous of taking it. How much do you take of it?

I've never done movical so I can't really say. I drink a different brand and just do about 6oz in the evening before bed.
Everyone is different though. You won't know how much works for you til you try it.
I like the taste, but some people hate it. Image
You might also try a spoonful or two of olive oil/day. I have stopped doing this myself, as I find the prune juice to be enough.

Many Thanks for the advice Tanya.
I will try it tonight. I have been 5 months pain free with one or two set backs. Movicol has helped this along and I would like to continue like this. I will have this fissure for 3 years in June.

My pleasure.
It's terrible how there's never an easy answer as to how to heal an AF. Other ailments the doctors are super helpful. But not for this it seems.
Best wishes!

Possible dumb question for the OP but here goes anyway ... how do you know you're allergic to Movicol? (Not that I'm doubting you, just curious.)
Movicol is an osmotic laxative so AFAIK Lactulose would probably be the closest thing conceptually as that's also an osmotic laxative. I'm not sure what other popular and well studied osmotic laxatives are available though (sorry).

I have an allergy to Movicol as confirmed by my consultant and GP. Symptoms started with a very swollen abdomen and slightly swollen ankles. I still persevered as the movicol was working as I had hoped. Then rashes appeared on my body especially anywhere I was prone to feel warm ie around the top of my trousers, chest area etc. This was large whelts of hives not just a few. Then at least twice a week my mouth would swell as though I had fillers injected. Finally the wheezing started early in the morning and that finished me with Movicol. I checked websites where others confirmed their reactions. I am also allergic to Coke - any brand.

Milk of Magnesium works as a laxative by keeping water in the bowel also. It can cause some cramping in some people though.

I have never heard of anyone being allergic to Movicol, but I guess anything is possible Image
I posted this recipe many months ago:
1 cup oat bran
1 cup applesauce
1/4 cup prune juice
Mix all together. Start out by taking 1 Tbsp. nightly and gradually (over a period of weeks) work up to 4 Tbsp. nightly and follow it with a glass of water. Taking this mixture has allowed me to reduce the amount of Movicol/Miralax I take nightly. It could be worth a try. Plus everything in it is good nutritionally!!
