Stressed About Colonscopy

Postby Dundee22 » 23 May 2012, 20:40

Thanks in advance for your patience with me.
I'm 48 and have been dealing with occasional blood on tp and minor stinging off and on for about 2 years. I've been fortunate that it's never been more than a nuisance to me as I have had very little pain (outside of a bout with a fistula last year) and it usually only last a few days. Last year in April I saw a specialist (CR Surgeon) and he diagnosed an AF without having to use any instruments (just his digits). At the time he said any bouts of bleeding create a recommendation of a Colonoscopy from him. He didn't seem to pressure me to much, so since he saw the AF I didn't worry about it.
I just saw him again today to check out a episode I've been having the last month. A little more stinging than usual, but no biggie, I was just concerned that it wasn't go away after a few weeks. He was able to re-diagnose the AF, but then said I should get a Colonscopy and probably should have done it last year.
I'm now planning to do the Colonscopy, but I'm going to be changing jobs/insurance so it's best for me to financially and bureaucratically wait 3-4 months. It has me a little freaked out now that I'm waiting. I always figured he had to recommend the Colonoscopy as a CYA since he did see the AF and probably knew that was the source of the blood, but since he reiterated it today a little more stress has been caused and I've decided to do it before my 50th
Long story to get to my question. . Should I be freaked out about potentially waiting another 4 months, or is this more of a standard recommendation from the specialist and since he was able to diagnose the AF it's probably not a big deal, just standard operating procedure?

I should add I told the CRS my situation and he said they will call me in three months and didn't add any stress on me to do it immediately, I'm just starting to get paranoid about it and was looking for some of your guys experience on whether a Colonosopy was deemed necessary even after the AF diagnosis was confirmed

Most physicians will recommend colonoscopy at any sign of bleeding or any abnormal lesion anywhere in the GI tract, including the anus, just to be on the absolute safe side and also as a matter of liability. Of course, you have to go with your own gut feeling and what makes you feel most comfortable, but frankly, waiting a few months isn't likely to impact things at all. If anything, it gives you more time to get your fissure healed because both the prep and the procedure are going to put stress on the anal area. Given that your doctor can see your fissure by visual inspection alone, you have even less to be worried about in terms of anything ominous. Just my opinion, of course. Always follow your own instincts and what makes you feel most at ease.

I wouldn't worry in the slightest about having to wait a few months. In fact, with a confirmed AF, I probably wouldn't have it done at all. But that's just me.

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy in August and am very stressed about it too. My sister has had many fissures and fistulas, she has Crohn's disease and she says they use a pediatric scope on her. I intend to make an appointment and discuss the risks of re injury before my colonoscopy, if and only if I am healed by then and before I let my Dr. do this and I will be insisting on the pediatric scope. The exam for my fissure put me down completely for three days, I'll never let anyone do that to me again.
