Hey everyone,
All your posts, information and different stories have been both helpful and in some cases very scary over the last few months!
I've had a fissure for a year and a half now, and am going for surgery in 1 day. A fissurectomy and sphincterotomy. I am pretty nervous, even though I've been through bigger surgeries in the past (spinal fusion). I've heard of many positive outcomes from chronic fissures, and also heard some very unfortunate negative ones and to everyone I wish them the best of luck as we all get to this point together, at least united here.
My surgeon and other specialists have told me this surgery (although they use a less evasive term, "a procedure") has a 99% success rate and is fairly routine, at this point I hope it is that or even close to what they describe. I've had mine for 1.5 years, and have heard of people having fissures for up to 40 years. I would think some discomfort after surgery is expected and encouraged when dealing with these things for as long as some of us have. To those people and everyone, I say my thoughts are with you whom ever you may be, as I try to correct my situation.
The next few weeks, possibly months should be interesting, I hope they give me some pain medication, as I can't imagine any aspect of this is going to be fun. My fissure pain, itchiness and the like has been unbearable for too long, I hope the surgery brings nothing more, only less pain and discomfort to myself and all of you dealing with any sort of pain. The best of luck to all of you, my thoughts will be with everyone as I experience what many of you have already and many will. Thank you for everything so far, all of your information has been very enlightening and helpful.
Regardless of many prolonged recoveries and other horror stories, I am at the point where I feel it's worth it to go through hell to get to heaven, and I hope everyone finds their way and is on the path to feeling better and an improved quality of life!

Good luck with your surgery! Try not to let the scarier stories scare you too much. Jst take everything one step at a time. Just keep telling yourself you're going to do great, and this is all going to be a memory for you soon.

Good luck for your surgery. I am sure everything will go well and you'll be glad you went through it. I feel I am one who is having a slightly longer recovery, but like you say you need to go through pain to get better!! Your positivity has put a smile on my face. I wish you all the best :)

Good luck! I had my fissurectomy/LIS 3 1/2 months ago. I feel pretty good now except I was left with a bothersome skin tag..the fissure healed nicely though. I wont lie, the first few days are hell, at least for me as mine was pretty deep and I had lost 25lbs in 2 months so I was weak. Make sure you have your miralax (muvicol i think in UK) ready to go. I didnt start it for 2 weeks after surgery and it would have made so much of a difference. Lots and lots of hot baths and lots and lots of liquids. I actually feel like living again and honestly before surgery there were days I didnt think I would ever feel human again. No incontinence (I thought i would be wearing a diaper for the rest of my life)..and no infection as they put the antibiotic right into my iv during surgery. Anyway, I wish you the best and prayers for a successful surgery!

CJazzy, GOOD LUCK with your surgery. I had it done (fissurectomy) 3 weeks ago. It is the best thing I have done. You will be nervous before the surgery, it's done so quick you won't even know. Take your meds when you feel pain, that's what meds are for. Eat oatmeal, take miralax, drink water. Like Neen said, the first few days are painful, but you will get through it. Just think it will all be over very soon. Wish you the best, you're doing the right thing.

Hey everyone, Thank you so much for all your support, well wishes, and advice before my surgery.
I had it done on Tuesday and all of you were right, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Yes it is indeed very sore and painful post-op, but nothing inherently worse than dealing with the fissure before the procedure as it is. I take a perciset every 4 hours when the pain spikes, then an epsom salts bath and back to bed, this routine has worked out great so far. I've been eating light, started out with oatmeal, then moved up to some tilapia and mashed potatoes, then yesterday i had meat loaf, all easy digestible items.
I had my first bowel movement this morning, and due to the fact that i've been taking so many stool softeners and laxatives, mixed with the pain killers it sort of evened out, wasn't too soft or hard, there was a definite pressure but nothing unmanageable or too unbearable. Hoping to continue this routine into a full recovery. The procedure only took an hour which was nice, they took me at 2:10 and within 1 minute I was sleeping. I woke up in recovery and looked at the clock at 3:10, was out of the hospital by 5. I was lucky to have such a great team of nurses and doctors, all were so friendly and helped calm my nerves before hand.

So glad you are feeling well...it really is nothing compared to pre-surgery when you have been hurting for so long. I am impressed with your menu...I havent even graduated to meats yet! I wish you continued success and a happy butt finally!

Thanks a bunch. I'm eating meat but not in big amounts or anything, I can't eat that much anyways, my appetite hasn't fully come back. There was awhile where I was eating too much fibre which can be a problem as well, everything in moderation! I hope you heal up fast so you can put this behind you (no pun intended) and enjoy the foods you want to be eating and the life you want to be living!
