I made a couple of notes on several threads about Rectiv today, but I think it's worth it's own thread. I'm new to the forum, but I did't see this info anywhere.
I have noticed that some members seem to use the word Rectiv, in place of nitro cream. I'm concerned because there is a difference people should understand. The nitro that we get at the compound pharmacy is 0.2%. Rectiv is on a pharmacy shelf (no more compounding) and requires an Rx. It is twice the strength of what most of us have been using. It is 0.4%. This can mean increased or worsening side effects.
It is not for everyone, and most likely you would be given the 0.2% first, and if no response given Rectiv at 0.4%. Side effects can be headaches, slow heartrate, and low blood pressure (to the point of passing out). It directly affects the vascular system and heart (even when applied to the A). Lots of potential drug interactions. One of the most concerning interaction would be if you are taking Viagra. Can result in death! There are additional warnings to use only for 3 wks (not sure why).
Last is the cost. It is brand name only, so wont be covered by many insurances (my deduction). Unfortunately the cost is over $400 (Walmart), so your A must hurt pretty bad to buy it! If you go to the website for Rectiv, you can find a coupon to print out that states you will not pay over $40 if you have insurance. There is also a section for financial help in other situations. Here is a link to the website. http://www.rectiv.com/en/index
Sorry this is so long. Good luck to all in the quest for a "Cure".
