It can be very time consuming!! I've traced my mother's father's side back to 1857 (marriage certificate). That is where I'm stuck. To complicate matters my mother's maiden name was Fox which at some point was previously Fuchs. Fox is about as common as Smith, unfortunately. The swab traced my mother's maternal line. It was through the National Geographic initiative. We did it through a study group at a nearby university.

He is an absolute cutey, Cheryl!
I have traced the paternal side of my family, with proof, back to the late 1600s in Norfolk, England. The rest are Irish and not so easy to research. You are right about it being time consuming. Also expensive over the years, accumulating certificates and parish records.

Thanks, Sav!! And good for you going all the way back to the 1600's. That's truly AMAZING!!!! I started doing this in the 80's. The prices for certificates have risen since that time!!! I find that if one's ancestors had CHURCH records, that makes for better genealogy results!
