Abcess?

Postby dexlex1 » 05 Nov 2012, 07:01

Hi Guys
Ive not been on in a while.... not becuase I have been pain free but becuase I have been managing to cope with the pain through using Movical and Installagel.
However, today I have a different issue. I think I have or am developing an abcess on the perenium. Its swollen and hurts to touch and is right next to 2 large skin tags I have. I have phoned the doctor and got an appointment for next week, but I am wondering if I should be a little more pushy and get an appointment this week? As i have read horror stories about abcesses and I don't want to leave mine so that I eventually need more surgery than is needed.
Anyone had one and care to share how they got it treated?
Thanks in advance...

Hi dex!
so sorry you have this new trouble that has cropped up. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to be seen sooner if possible. Any time you can catch something like this sooner it is going to be easier to get it sorted out with less pain and less chance of a more extensive problem. In the meantime, hot compresses can help.
Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hey Dex get it looked at asap go to your hospital if necessary'
Just say you are in pain '
Have you had the shakes feeling unwell'
Dex I had one 'i did not knowI had it until it was to late it started to burst and had an op to clean an drain the abscess left me with a nice big wound and a Seton drain going through a fistula'and have to have another op in December to sort out the fistula'
These abscess cause a fistula in about 50% '
So its best to get it looked at asap
Of course it may not be an abscess

Hi Dex,
Having also suffered an abscess earlier this year that developed a fistula tract, I would advise you just get in as an emergency appointment with a GP, who can advise you one way or another. Mine came on very quickly and I got straight in with my GP, who diagnosed the abscess and immediately prescribed anti-biotics. It burst at home and the fistula developed a week or two after. It's been surgically treated since and all in all, everything was OK. I think the fact it had happened quickly and I sought help quickly played a vital role as the Fistula was very small, superficial and easily treatable. The abscess was to date, the sorest part, but was greatly relieved once it had burst.
It may well be that you don't have an abscess anyway and it could be a pile but best to get your mind at rest asap.
As Rich also says not all abscess' develop into Fistulas, just 50% ish of us unlucky ones!! If it's going to happen, it will, but on the whole, get it sorted quickly and everything is manageable. Nothing for me has been as bad as having to deal with a fissure and the pain it brings. An abscess/ fistula comes nowhere near as bad! Honestly....
Don't scare yourself with some of the horror stories you read. They are in the minority and most of us get through it in the end quite happily!...
Wishing you all the very best and hoping it's not as bad as you think :)

Hi guys.
Well I went to a&e later that night. The pain was moderate but I just thought I'd go there because I know that the sooner these things are sorted the better.
I think I did the right thing, I was admitted to
Hospital and had an op to remove it yesterday. I'm
Now at home resting and recovering. Almost pain free! 😃 got to have dressings changed everyday. Just hope I don't develop a fistula but I'm feeling positive. So thanks, I'm glad I asked and acted swiftly as I think I may have fended off any future problems. Fingers crossed!
😃

Great news Dex,
So was it an abscess and did they drain it????
Acting quickly is definately a wise move and keeping my fingers crossed for you that it all heals quickly now and you caught it before any potential fistula development! (Not that you'd have necessarily got one anyway...)
All the best & hoping the ordeal is over for you! :)

Yes it was an abscess. A relatively small one because it didn't have much room (it's actually in the perineum) the bit in between.
So it's been drained and now trying to heal. But because it's small then hopefully things are ok.
Have to go back in 3 weeks to see consultant so fingers crossed it will all be good news. No fistula. but I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your support!
