Blood 4 weeks post LIS

Postby Melsa » 15 Nov 2012, 03:32

Hi, this is my first post here!
I suffered from a chronic fissure (well, two!) for 5 months following the rough forceps delivery of my son. As with all fissures, I was in excruciating pain and ended up in emergency hysterical after a very painful BM. My specialist appointment wasn't for another week - I was a mess. The fissures were taking over my life and I found it hard to deal with, being a a first time parent and looking after a young baby. Anyway, 4 weeks ago I had a LIS and had an amazing recovery. I had bad pain for 2 days and then slight discomfort for around a week. I now have no pain at all. Today when having a BM I noticed quite a bit of blood in the loo(both times)! I was horrified and got sad straight away! I am still on softeners and am very slowly minimizing the amount, but I think I minimized it too quickly. My BM was not too hard, it was easy to pass, but I did feel as though I could feel something when I did. No pain, just slight discomfort. Has anyone else had this happen? What was it and how did you overcome it?
Tia!

Hi! Welcome to the board! I'm sorry you have to be here, but you're in the right place. Congratulations on being four weeks out from surgery!
While I haven't had surgery myself and hopefully someone who has can jump in and give you better advice, I have read a lot of surgical experiences, and what is happening with you doesn't sound all that unusual. Healing occurs in stages, and keeping the consistency of BMs the exact same every day can be really hard to do. You probably did just try to wean the stool softeners a bit soon, as many post surgical patients often continue them for a few months after surgery.
It's always best to check with your surgeon to make sure everything is okay.
Again, welcome, and hopefully this whole fissure ordeal will be over for you really soon so you can move on with your baby!

Thanks for the welcome and response! No blood today, I went back to my usual softener amount. I checked with my GP and she said to keep on the softeners for a while - she said she doesn't want to see me in pain like that again.
I just hope I can get off them sooner rather than later, I have days that I wonder if my body will ever function normally hahaha!
Are you going to have a LIS? How long have you had a fissure? I hate seeing so many people going through this nightmare. Worse than childbirth x 10!

Hi Mel. This is my first post too. I had an LIS and a fissurectomy 14 weeks ago. Still have blood occasionally, mostly on paper or dilator, sometimes in bowl. No blood in the past week and the longest I've gone is 2 weeks without blood. Rang the CRS last week and was advised not to be too concerned as it can take many months to fully heal. I have to continue to use the dilator for a full month after all symptoms, including blood, stop. So overall I'm not worried at this stage. Hope this helps.

Hi!
Oh, I'm so glad you got a hold of your doctor and you are back on track. Don't worry about the dependency on stool softeners right now. Stool softeners don't work on the nerves in the bowel so they aren't stimulating a bowel movement, they are just drawing more water into the colon to keep stools soft.
Thank you for asking about me. I've had anywhere from 1 to 4 fissures at a time for over a year. Consults with various surgeons and they all agree I'm not a good candidate for surgery for a number of reasons having to do with other health issues. So, that has left me pretty much having to learn how to cope with them on my own.
I wish you all the best with your healing, and hope it is all smooth sailing from here.

Thanks Bob, that is good to know. I will just continue with what I am doing. I hope yours clear up really soon, you aren't in any pain after the LIS?
Jr, do you know anything about Coloxyl with Senna? I'm currently using that and also Osmolax as they are he only two things that have kept everything favourable. My specialist said Coloxyl is a bowel stimulant and she wants me off it, GP said to continue as I've only been on that one for two months (and she is the one who has seen me in hysterics!). Problem is when I cut the Coloxyl dose in half (1 tab instead of two) things go badly! Sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place (mind the pun). It's a shame you aren't able to have surgery, I hope you can manage it well :)

Mel, I was in a lot of pain post op but managed with Targin (which I was told was a newer drug here in Australia good for this operation) then off that and onto panadol. Only stopped using the last of the pain relief meds 2 weeks ago which was Xylocaine jelly on the dilator. So currently no pain at the moment, just slight tightness sometimes.
