Really bad constipation following surgery

Postby EJ107 » 29 Jan 2013, 19:02

I've had a fissure since July last year and finally had an operation last Thursday where they injected botox. I didn't have any pain at all after the operation (It usually only hurts during a bm anyway), so I was relatively optimistic.
But ever since the operation I have been suffering from awful constipation. My diet is the same, I'm still taking lactulose, but I just cannot go, and it's complete agony. The operation was supposedly supposed to relax the muscles, but I've spent so long sitting on the toilet in pain trying to go they've been in more stress than ever. I have no idea if it was caused by the operation or not, but still being unable to have a proper bm 5 days after the operation I'm becoming increasingly worried.

I've not taken any pain medicine (other than whatever they gave me during my operation) and I've been drinking so much water over the last few days it's ridiculous. But despite that and despite the fact that I've been taking lactulose daily I still haven't been able to have a proper bm for about a week, and It's starting to get incredibly painful.

Have you tried an over-the-counter laxative (like Senakot)? Or an enema?

EJ107. Sorry that you are in such pain.
Below is a link to an article on post-operative constipation, which is quite good to read through.
In the end though, if nothing works, I would contact the office of your surgeon and tell them about the problem.
The link: http://my.clevelandclinic.org/Documents/Florida/Gynecology/18-how-to-manage-post-op-constipation.pdf
Thinking of you.

Thanks for the link Savaici, it was useful.
I went to see the doctor today because the discomfort was becoming too great and I've been prescribed some movicol.
I'm trying to be optimistic about it all but It's infuriating that an operation that was supposed to relieve the pain has put me in the worst pain I've ever experienced. I really hope the movicol works.
