Constant Mucous discharge

Postby butthurt2525 » 05 Jul 2013, 11:57

Hey,
I just found this website and would like to share my experiences. In mid feburary i started to notice a mucous discharge coming out of my anus. The discharge was clear and i had no idea what it was coming from. Long story short, i have seen a GI specialist, had a colonoscopy, and recently saw a colrectial surgeon. I have an appointment with another surgeon in two weeks. Does anyone else have a mucous discharge with their fissure? It's the worse right before i have a bm as the the doc said the pressure of the stool entering the rectum pushes all the mucous out of my anal canal. The weird part is that i have almost no pain with my fissure and only noticed blood once or twice. It's just the constant wet feeling around my anus that causes me discomfort. Sometimes there would be so much mucous that it would soak all the way through my shorts. I just dont see how such a small wound (doc called it 1.5 cm long and superficial in depth) could cause so much mucous.

Hi there.
A few things that could be usefull to know:
Do you suffer from IBS?
Were you checked for an abcess or fistula?
Do you have an sentinel tag?
- Fissure developed in Jan '13
- Started rectogesic in Feb '13 and diltiazem Apr '13.
- Got botox Jun '13
- Healed by Okt '13, although I still had some irritation for about a year.
- New fissure April '22, healed June 2022
- New fissure 24. December 2023

Hi butthurt2525
Your Colon Rectal surgeon is your best bet in giving you the proper diagnosis.
Which Doc said it was 1.5 cm long?
It seems that most plain fissure do not produce the amount of mucous that you are describing, so there may be something more going on down there. Do you get a leakage throughout the day? also do you have an emptying urge?
Lets hope its not serious and good luck in your upcoming appointments. Others will soon chime in with more insights in their experiences.
stay tuned...

According to the colrectial surgeon and the other gi doctor I only have a small fissure. I so do not have ibs or anything else that I know of. I am slightly concerned that because of the amount of mucus it is actually leaking from my rectum instead of just being produced by the fissure and the irritated skin in the anal canal. The only reason I ever found the fissure in the first place was because of the mucus. I'm hoping its not a sphincter tone issue. The surgeon
did say my sphincter was normal when doing the digital exam. I might just be witch hunting that there is something else going on since it has been 6 months but I just want to find an end to this constant wetness.

If there was anything serious, then Colonoscopy would have detected it. Also, if the discharge began after the fissure episode, then it is strictly related to your fissure. Furthermore, I don't think you should be alarmed if the discharge is clear and odorless.
I suspect you are allergic to some food or medication that you may have started with (especially since February), during your fissure ordeal.  This will take a while to find out.  However, in the meantime, you may begin with a lactose-free diet and gradually progress it to a gluten-free one.  See if that helps.
Good Luck!

That's the thing. I don't know exactly when the fissure started since there was no pain. I could have had it for years and never known. My fear is that the clear mucus that leaks when there is even the slightest urge to go is totally unrelated to the fissure.

I apologize for overlooking your second response.  In my case, the mucus was mainly during the BM transition period from constipation to diarrhea or vice-versa.  The mucus was very little, clear, and foamy.  Initially, I thought it was due to IBS, but a flexi-sigmoidoscopy clarified that as negative.  Once this serious condition was ruled out, I simply tried to eliminate acidic (spicy) food, gluten and lactose.  I also consumed sugar in moderation.
So in your case, if we basically presume that it is not related to fissures, then the attention can be drawn to food.  Try eliminating food that stimulates mucus formation.
Here's an excerpt from a website that has a simple remedy.  Although the main reason draws attention to spicy food only, I find the remedy more versatile.  It suggests that you consume healthy fats with your regular food.
http://www.emaxhealth.com/8782/dr-oz-top-5-embarrassing-medical-conditions
"...healthy fats such as those from peanut butter, avocados or olives ... will help coat the food beforehand and prevent the intestinal tract from being stimulated to over-produce mucous"
I hope this info helps.
PS
uh...I would say.. skip the peanut butter :D , and focus on avocados and olives.  Incidentally, I follow this advice by consuming three tsp of olive oil (uncooked, organic and cold pressed) with my two basic meals daily.
