Comparison of over the counter drugs for curing a fissure

Postby putty » 26 Jul 2013, 19:22

I am in the final stage of healing of two fissures, meaning no more serious pain and now dealing with the after effects of the two fissures I experienced.  I am ready to begin playing tennis again.  Incredible pain the first 6 weeks from one chronic fissure.  I tried the following creams and ointments:  2.5% Hydrocortisone cream, 1% hydrocortisone cream, Hemorrhoidal witch hazel gel, 1% hydrocortisone ointment, baby oil from walmart, aloe vera cream from Walgreens.
My Conclusion:  after two weeks, the 2.5% hydrocortisone caused burning, and then skin problems, and some dizziness, and no more improvement.  1% hydrocortizone cream,  stopped it because of the side effects, and little ability to stop pain.  baby oil, too greasy,  aloe vera cream,  little effect.  1% hydrocortizone ointment, too greasy.
witch hazel gel with phenylephrine hcl from Walgreens.  This is all I use today.  It is nongreasy,  fairly good at relieving pain, and seems to work for me.  With baths, diet, walking, and this gel,  I am experiencing no more severe pain, only very minor irritation after BM, which does not last.  But I still have a sentinel hemo. left over from the two fissures.
Keep in mind, I did not have to deal with bleeding fissures.  Bleeding fissures probably require surgery.  One last item. My Dr.  did not prescribe nitroglycerin because of side effects.

Hi Putty welcome to this great site, sorry for these issues.
The thing about Hydro cortisone, is it can be irritating, but most of all it tends to thin the skin.
At the time when I didn't know what I had, My G.P gave me a script for cortisone, then when the pain got worse , she refereed me to a Gastrologist.
The Gastro, Doctor gave me a compound ointment of Nitro and xylicain, I don't get dizzy or headaches.
My Doctor was concerned with side effects and told me to use it at nite, a pea size on rectum only, but since i have no side effect's then she is happy, and i can apply it twice a day.
I actually don't feel it's strong enough, at my next visit, I.m going to ask for Dilitanzem Ointment. A lot of people like it here.

It's funny how we all have to find what work's for us , with a few tweaks here and there, this forum has offered so much advice.
It will do the same for you, try reading some of the post's, when you have time, very informative.
My fissure or it could be my hemie (I will find out next Doctor appointment) about twice a month I still get a tiny spot of blood, I was concerned so I called the digestive Clinic(where my Doctor is).
AS long as there is no mucas or sever pain, then it can be a good sign, that blood is reaching there and that means it's healing.
Take care, there's only one you.Image

Dear "Please go away"  (sounds like a race horse):
Blood in the rectum must be diagnosed by a competent physician. It is extremely important.  I don't know your age, but, a thorough exam is a must.  In my opinion, a colonoscopy, and or sigmoidoscopy are essential to rule out cancerous polyps, or to confirm simple bleeding hemmohorroid, or just a minor fissure. Blood in the rectum must be diagnosed.  Talk to your doctor.

My G.P referred me to this Digestive health Clinic , where they performed the Colonoscopy.
Sorry , I forgot to say, yes the digestive Clinic that I now go to, The first, visit a while back I had a Colonoscopy, that's when the Gastrologist discovered, my fissure, Diverticulitis and Hemies.
I don't have any polyps, from the test or a stool sample. My next appointment with the Specialist will be in little over a month, to see my progress, what next steps to take, with the hemies or what other decisions to make.
I'm gonna have her look at me down there,to see what's going on, and my progress.
Have a great day:)
Funny little story about how I used that name (Please go-away) when I was a little girl, and I would get a boo boo, my mom would say, after kissing it better "Close your eyes, real tight and repeat, please go away, three times". Sweet Memories...mmm.:D
