Prebiotics

Postby small_flower » 24 Sep 2008, 19:54

I'm sure many of you have heard of probiotics... But I have never heard of prebiotics.
Apparently, prebiotics are non living foods that cannot be digested in our bodies and they help grow good bacteria in our digestive systems. They are found in wheat, barley, flax, rye, oatmeal, onions, garlic, leeks, bananas, berries, honey, legumes, asparagus, greens, soy, raw potatoes, unripe fruit, cornstarch, and whole grains. Its also in sports drinks, weight loss products, meal replacements and supplement powders.
So... get to the point kate...
Prebiotics may:
increase bowl movement frequency
act as an antidiarrheal
help regulate insulin in diabetics
increase absorption of calcium, Magnesium, iron and zinc
reduce the risk of colon cancer
We need between 2-10 grams a day and theres aren't any side effects.
This may be something for us fissure sufferers to consider.
Just some interesting news I got from my "all natural" health nut grammie.

I think probiotics are good bacteria "in a capsule" form or taken alive with fermented milk and such.We need them in billions to help with digestion and keep bad bacteria at bay. They are beneficial in many other ways and many members here do take them regularly. They can only help - so yes, by all means it would be a good advice for members to try them : )!!!
Hope you are doing well Kate and thanks for the info

I think prebiotics is like the food that probiotics (beneficial bacteria) need to proliferate.
I think inulin is an example. They are starting to make probiotic formulas with the prebiotic food already in it.

My acacia fiber states that is is prebiotic soluble fiber. I buy it on line (HelpForIBS.com). Since it is a supplement and therefore not regulated, I can not be certain of what it really is.
