Surgery did not work

Postby kmax1940 » 11 May 2010, 17:07

Fought off and on for about 3 years with a fissure.
Finally had the Lat. Spinc. surgery about 1 month and a half ago.
After the first 2 weeks I had no blood or pain with a BM
Then a week and a half ago I had some tough stool.
The fissure starting bleeding again and bleeds with every BM now!
On fiber twice a day and stool softeners twice a day.
Went back to the dr. he basically said maybe try more stool softeners.
My stool is soft EXCEPT for the first bit...
Anyone else had this surgery and not had healing??
I really feel hopeless about it right now!
thanks
kj

I had the surgery one year ago and still experience pain on a daily basis, as well as painless muscle spasms. Today I noticed a small red spot on my stool.
I also get a significant amount of pain from the incision site in addition to the fissure area, although I am told there is no fissure. They can never answer me when I ask where the blood is coming from.

Some people here have had multiple surgeries before the problem was resolved. I only got LIS last week so I can't speak with much expertise on the matter. I know that even with LIS, the fissure still takes some time to heal though.
Also, have you had any other tests (e.g., colonoscopy, CT scan, flexible sigmoidoscopy, etc.) to rule out an underlying condition like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis? Sometimes other things can cause fissures and bleeding.
Also, what kind of stool softeners are you taking?
I do have the thing where only the tip of the stool is hard though. It's usually a hard tip followed by a lot of loose stool.

yes! just the first part is hard or big.... then after that its fine. If i could stop that then it would probably heal up. Anyone here know how to stop that?

You have to avoid "tough" stools for about a year , at least, for that area to heal properly !!!
Use stool softeners and stick to a "fissure diet" for many, many months. LIS is there only to HELP healing and is not going to help if other important factors are not in place : (( : soft poop, regular baths and soaks and "fissure diet".
Try all kind of softeners until you find the perfect one for you ! I wonder how you survived 3 years without making poop soft  . But, that does not matter now - just make sure you are "regular" and poop soft (not mushy - just "playable" ).
Best of luck healing !!!

We here actually invented the term LOL ; )) since it is a diet that universally helps across the board all fissure sufferers.
So , the "fissure diet" is such that includes a lot of fresh fruit, cooked veggies, minimum meat (mostly just chicken and fish).
BUT, equally important is to AVOID :
Pasta, white bread, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, red meat, cheese, junk food (fried stuff, cookies and other processed things) and also anything that personally constipates you.
One of the things that makes my poop harder is white rice - but for many it is not a problem - so you hopefully by now know what makes your poop not soft enough : ((.
I also avoided milk, sugar, and oh, yes - VERY important - avoid so called "scratchy" foods - like popcorn, nuts ,tacos and such Image They never get soft in the guts and come out still with "sharp edges" and it can hurt : (((
Hope it helped : )))

Fiss,
I haven't eaten pasta since you wrote about its constipating effects!! (even whole wheat pasta seemed to be a problem for me)
