My 1 year old baby girl has a fissure

Postby angelmummy2 » 10 Mar 2011, 20:14

Hi everyone,
My daughter who recently turned one, suffers from constipation and as a result has a fissure I think is quite big. She is currently on about the twentieth treatment being tried for the constipation, but I would love some advice on treatments and relief for the fissure. One thing the doctor has told me to do which im not sure about is glycerin suppositries. I'm worried that with the fissure that would be really painful. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I'm sorry that your daughter has a fissure at just 1 year old, unfortunately it's quite common in infants as well as adults.
I'm not sure if any of the creams/ointments adults use can be used in a child so young, you would have to speak with your GP, in the meantime I would change your daughters diaper frequently and use either Sudocrem or Bepanthen on the anal area to help soothe it, rather than wipe the babies bum, use cotton wool balls soaked in lukewarm water, don't use baby wipes.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jessica,
My son suffered from this at 10 months old (must get his colon from his mommy, lol). Anyway it was short lived. He was actually constipated so bad that we had to take him to the hospital because he was impacted. Thank god he got it out right there on the table in front of the doctor (after hours of it being stuck!). It is like he knew what there were going to do!
Anyway, after talking to the doctor, apparently it is common for babies of that age to get constipated, especially when they are being removed from the breast and starting homo milk. That was exactly our case. I had to abruptly wean him due to my medical issues and meds that I needed to take twice in a month. I pumped and dumped two times and then had to give it up compeletely. I think it was rough on his digestive system. If only I would've known. So we were given the glycerine suppositories and some baby butt cream (hydrocortizone i believe). It cleared up in a couple of weeks and he's been good for well over a year now. We also still monitor him and he gets jarred prunes every once in a while which fixes him in an instant. Hope that helps and good luck!

thank you :) Its a relief to know the suppositories arent so bad. I stopped breast feeding when she was 3 months, I ran out of milk :( But it could very possibly still be from that, as the problem started around then. I think the cream you used is the same as the one iv been given for her, so glad to hear it works. I have also been told to give her liquid parrafin oil everyday for two months. It seems slightly better than it was, there was a time I actually had to help it out with a cotton bud.. sorry for the graphic image Image thanks so much for your response :)

Hi angel,
I alway have a 1yr old and she went thru a spurt of constpating at about 6 months old this is what i done.
Porrige for breaky with mushed up prunes (2 prunes boiled then blended)
morning tea a bottle/drink about 100mls of prune juice (2 prunes boiled then strained the lumps out)
always had a pear a day as well.
This worked wonders for her.
I had to take her to hospital one night and they gave her a suppository and i said to my husband i am never putting her thru that again i think it hurt me more.
I would also take her to your Pediatrician if its still going on.

I have 1.5 year old twins. They've both been constipated at various points.
My daughter had painful bowel movements with bloody stools a while ago and it was diagnosed as a likely fissure. The doc told us to give her Miralax, and that took care of things in about a week.
My son's never had a fissure, but we've given him the glycerin suppositories for constipation before. They work great for him. Just make sure you buy the really small kind made for pediatric patients (width should be between a toothpick and a pencil).
Between the two, I'd vote for the glycerin suppositories if it's only constipation. If there's a fissure I'd go with Miralax. I use it myself on a permanent basis and it's often given to pediatric patients. Nothing else comes close to it in efficacy IMO (main complaint that I've seen is that it can work TOO well for some folks).
