Trying to find a happy medium...

Postby Deedee62 » 16 Apr 2011, 09:24

The doctor has me on Nifedipine 3x daily, Metamucil 1x daily (1 tsp) and 3 stool softeners daily. I am beginning to get more and more solid and it hurts. I am following the high fiber diet and drinking water instead of anything else during the day. What else can I do?

My doc said metamucil 3x daily but was too much. You've got to try miralax/movical/ restoralax... Made all the diff in the world for me. Benefiber in am, doesn't cause the extra bm, then metamucil with 1/2 dose restoralax before dinner and same before bed. This way I have oneaybe two bms in morning and ok for rest of day. Since I started this, I haven't had bleeding even once...

I take one movicol midday and eat fruit and drink plenty of water. This keeps me regular and soft but everyone is different you have to experiment a little until you find the right combo of stuff. Movicol seems to be the 'weapon' of choice for most on here. Hope you find the answer soon.

The Miralax is working great. Still using Metamucil 1x daily, but this has helped a LOT!!

I can't believe the difference in less than a week! The nifedipine is working beautifully and the Miralax is keeping me going. At the same time I am wondering if I will have to keep this up forever?

Me too! After a few months of discomfort I've improved a lot in the last couple of weeks.
I've no idea whether it's causal but my improvement started after I changed from a lactulose to a macrogol / PEG based product (laxido) AND got a new, and seemingly better diltiazem. So far (fingers crossed, touch wood etc.) the bleeding has stopped and the discomfort is considerably less. Needless to say I'm also following all the other conservative methods.
But note this is certainly not an extensive double-blind placebo-controlled, peer-reviewed study!
So I'd also suggest that a marcogol / PEG product might possibly be worth a try for those who haven't tried it. I would suggest you give it about a week to take effect (the first couple of days there was not a lot of change for me).
Good luck to all - may you be forever soft and regular!

Yeah, it seems to be good. Many people here (me included) have been getting good results with Miralax or Movicol which are both macrogols.
I'm getting so well now that I'm trying to stop and see if I can survive just by eating enough fibres and drink enough water ...
