HELP!!! About to use GTN for first time

Postby Davo » 30 Nov 2011, 00:44

After using every available over the counter remedy and a few prescribed ones (Lidocaine and Proctosedyl) the doctor has finally prescribed me 0.4% GTN (Rectogesic).
Now I would normally be fine with taking new medication even though the doctor has advised me about the possible side effects of headaches but after reading various websites i am as nervous as hell. So i would be very grateful if people could answer a few of my worries or give me their experiences of GTN:
1. How severe was your headache?
2. How long did your headache last (I am told up to 30 minutes)
3. Did you take anything for the headache?
4. How many days did you have the heacache for whilst taking GTN.
and finally
I am due to go on an eight hour flight next week and currently i can hardly sit down for more than 5 minutes at a time after a BM - would anybody have any advice?
Thanks in advance

I haven't used that cream but i know you should apply it with a glove so that it touches as little of your skin as possible (where it's not needed).

Hi, thanks for the information
The Chemist told me to either use gloves (which were out of stock... typical) or cover my finger in cling film (sandwich wrap) and make sure i was my hands thoroughly after use.
I am going to use the cream for this first time tonight

Hey Davo,
I used a q-tip to apply the diltiazem. I know it's not always easy to get the aim right and hit the spot...

A Q-tip? I am presuming that is like a cotton bud (I am from the UK).
It sounds a good idea however i need to apply 2.5cm so it may be a little too much for a cotton bud

Davo, I used my finger to apply, if you do, make sure that your finger nails are extremely short and your hands are clean, I've never had a problem applying it this way.

Sorry about that Davo. I guess it would be called a cotton swab in the UK Image Q-tips are a brand here in the US.
I'm pretty sure they won't be helpful if you are applying internally.

Well i've done it... phew!!
2.5cm recommended dose of 0.4% GTN applied using a surgical glove. A very mild headache followed for about 40 minutes but it was hardly noticeable - what i noticed more is the light head and dizziness but it was actually quite pleasant to be honest!
Nothing to worry about really - lets see what its like when i apply it again after a BM tomorrow.
How long does it normally take until i feel symptom relief with my fissure? Are we talking days or weeks?

hi Davo, for me i applied the GTN externally with my fingers in the past, and there's some relief which follows in the next day. BUT again, this depends on individuals
