LIS in August and bleeding has returned

Postby Guest » 11 Dec 2011, 09:46

Hi, I had my LIS back in August for an anal fissure. I had two hemmorhoid banding procedures and a PPH procedure prior to that. Now the rectal bleeding has returned. I'm really frustrated and dissappointed. I've felt pretty good since the LIS and hadn't had any problems with pain, bleeding, or bowel movements until this past week. I changed my diet to include 35-42 grams of fiber each day, 2-3 liters of water, no sodas, no fast food, no junk food, no alcohol, lots of fruit and veggies, and I've dropped over 40lbs. About a week ago I strained a muscle in my back at work so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with this recurrance since it started right around the same time. I know my surgeon is going to send me to a specialist when I call him tomorrow, but I really don't want to have to endure yet another surgery or the medical bills that I'll no doubt be incurring. I was planning to drop my insurance this year just so I could get caught up from all these other medical bills and now it's looking like I'm going to have even more of them. Not sure what to do.

Hi,
I can certainly sympathize with you! I had my LIS back in late March and since then I've had about 5 different episodes of bleeding. The good news is that it can heal on its own now when it does retear, and it's not nearly as painful when it tears, AND I no longer have spasms.
Are you in pain? I'm not sure you'd want more surgery at this point, because it hasn't been that long since your LIS. Most people advise to wait at least 6 months to 1 year before doing another LIS. It's a good idea to see your doctor though, especially if you're not sure whether this is a hem flareup or a fissure flareup. You did say you strained your back--did you have to take any painkillers for that? Especially narcotic ones? Because those are very constipating and could definitely cause a problem. You could try taking some Miralax/Movicol and give this some time before calling the doctor, if you're comfortable with waiting or you just don't want to spend the money right now.
Just remember this poor, delicate, overworked area can take ages and AGES to heal! The common wisdom around here is that it can take a year or more for the tissues to regain most of their pre-fissure strength. Honestly, I haven't been back to the doctor for my retears....I've considered it, but I'm just not mentally ready for another surgery right now so I'm going to give it a year or two and see where I'm at.

Ok, I hope I don't seem to overbearing with all these links I find, but I thought it may be helpful to know there are others who are doing fine and had the same problem!

Dawn, your input is like gold :)! I had forgotten all about that post, and I even commented on it originally. Sidra's comment is the most valuable to me. It's just good to know that I'm not alone and others have gradually gotten better too after a long period of time after the surgery. The doctors do give you the impression that you'll be good as new in a few weeks, but that isn't always the case, obviously!
The one person whose posts still bother me is Juney. What a horrible experience she had and she was so young...and then she disappeared so who knows how she's doing. I really hope she's fine now, because at one point in her posts she seemed depressed enough to suicide.

I know, Juney's story was heartbreaking and scared the mess out of me Image From what I read, she went on to have Botox after two surgeries... It just seemed like she never got relief with her surgeries.
I think your results have been more typical of slower or (bumpier ride) healing , Alpine. I think you're going to get there! I thought of you when I saw Sidra's comment. :)

I had LIS in 2007, and retore many times, but it did heal up again after a week or so each time - and there were no spasms!
I do hope Juney's ok and did eventually heal :(
